With the exception of some bad weather on Wednesday resulting in the cancellation of the parish Thanksgiving service, the rest of the holiday weekend was unseasonably nice. But winter came roaring back with snow and stormy conditions on Monday and Tuesday.
In St. John's/Kongsvinger parish news: Parish Bible study will conclude on Dec. 9. Studies will be at St. John's from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. and at Kongsvinger from 7-8 p.m.
There will be a Christmas carol sing-a-long at St. John's on Dec. 5 beginning at 4:30 p.m. A light lunch will be served following.
There will be a red poinsettia garden in the parish this year at Christmas services. If you would like to order one please call the parish office at 246-3211 by Dec. 18.
The parish will again have a hat /mitten tree in the back of both churches. Hats and mittens will be collected until Dec. 12 and donated to the Salvation Army.
Kongsvinger will again hold its annual Christmas card club. To participate, you may give your donation to Florentine Erickson or Bertha Larson.
The December parish newsletter is now out. Extra copies are available in the narthex of each church.
Pedersen Funeral Home's "A Time to Remember" will be held at the funeral home in Morris on Dec. 12.
A piano recital by Luke Fiskness to benefit local charities will be held at the Morris Area Elementary concert hall on Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m. This event is sponsored by Thrivent and there will be a free will offering to benefit the food shelf and the Giving Tree. For more details call 589-1731.
WordAlone Ministries will meet today (Saturday) at Our Savior's Church in Chokio beginning at 10 a.m.
The 2nd annual Holidazzle trim-a-tree event and silent auction will be held at the Donnelly Hall Dec. 4 and 5 from 12-4 p.m. both days. Stop in for hot cider, coffee, sweets and other goodies. Proceeds will be used for renovations of the Donnelly hall.
Also going on today (Saturday) is the annual holiday open house at the Stevens County Historical Museum from 9 a.m. to noon and the Christmas bazaar at the Morris Senior Center beginning 9 a.m.
The Red Hatters will meet on Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. at "Place To Be" for pizza. For those that wish to participate in a cookie exchange please bring two dozen cookies or goodies.
Learning Unlimited will meet on Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. at the Morris Senior Center. Laird Barber will be the speaker.
Santa will be stopping in Donnelly on Dec. 11 at the hall at 1 p.m. Children of all ages are invited.
There is a drop box for Toys for Tots at the bank in Donnelly.
Leo A. Storbakken of Minneapolis passed away on Nov. 22. His sister, Mabel Realdsen. is among the family members who survive him.
Phyllis Gausman of Alberta passed away on Nov. 25. A step-granddaughter, Jen (Joey) Fults and their family are among her survivors.
Mildred Stark of Morris formerly of Kensington passed away on Nov. 27. A nephew Jim (Lorraine) Aanerud and his family are among her survivors. She was a classmate of my aunt Mabel's in Elbow Lake. After her funeral I stopped into the Good Samaritan Home to visit with Thelma Leegard. She asked me to say "hi" to everyone in the Donnelly area.
Les Huebner of Morris formerly of Donnelly passed away on Nov. 30. His funeral will be held today (Saturday).
Congratulations to Doug Wilts on being recognized as a key leader for the Redwood 4-H at the Grant County 4-H awards program held recently.
Congratulations to Mark and Deb Erickson for being named the 2010 outstanding oil conservationists in Stevens County.
Congratulations to Chandler (honorable mention) and Alex Erickson of the Chokio-Alberta football team on being named to the all-conference team in the Pheasant conference.
Congratulations to Irv Sax who is the new manager of the Sled Shed of rural Wendell. His parents are Rosie and the late Clyde Sax of Elbow Lake formerly of Donnelly.
At a recent meeting of the Rendsville 4-H Club the following were elected as officers: Cami Aanerud, president; Jacob Sperr, vice president; Shannon Kill, secretary; Savannah Aanerud, treasurer; Sydney Sperr, reporter; Julie Kill, key leader; and Lori Sperr, assistant key leader.
On Nov. 24 I stopped into Legacy Living to wish my cousin, Bev Hurlbut, a Happy Thanksgiving.
Lloyd and Jan Anderson were among the exhibitors at the holiday craft fair in Morris on Nov. 26.
In the afternoon, John and Joan Kopacek, Jan Greiner and I helped decorate St John's. Lowell and Sandy Dunn and their family decorated Kongsvinger. Both churches look very festive now.
Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended services at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Morris on Nov. 28. Afterwards I took in the open house at Unger Furniture in Morris. In the evening Eystads attended the sing-a-long at the Eden Reformed Church in Herman.
On Nov. 25 Pearl A. Anderson and Jim and Lou Eystad attended the community thanksgiving meal at the Assumption Catholic Church in Morris. Jeff and Gayle Gibson and family of Avon and Donna Frank of Starbuck were dinner guests at Sam and Dorothy Johrdheim home in Donnelly.
Andy Brevig and I attended parish Bible study at St. John's on Dec. 1.
