There is a saying that if you don't like the weather in Minnesota, wait five minutes and it will change. This has been true the past couple of weeks. We have gone from snow and cold temperatures a couple weeks ago, to enjoying sunshine and record high temperatures during the past week. Some friends report sitting on their deck in t-shirts and bare feet on Tuesday. Wednesday, it was back to reality with snow and cold temperatures.


In St. John's/ Kongsvinger parish news: There will not be communion services on Jan. 15 but instead on Jan. 22. On Jan. 15 at St. John's there will be a welcome coffee hour for Irene Goldstein before services and Tom and Pearl Horning will be providing music.

From Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Morris: There will be adult forums following coffee hour every Sunday. New member Sunday is Jan. 15.

Rev. Paul Erdal will be installed as the new pastor of First Lutheran Church of Morris on Jan. 15 at the 8:15 and 10:45 a.m. services. A potluck dinner will follow the second service.

The movie "A Shot in the Dark" will be shown at First Lutheran on Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. A free will offering will be taken.

Habitat for Humanity will hold their annual pancake breakfast fundraiser on Jan. 15 from 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Morris American Legion. A free will offering will be taken.

I have learned that Father Bob Kieffer of Assumption Catholic Church in Morris is a nephew of a former Donnelly area resident Emma (Larson) Kieffer.

The Donnelly Rod and Gun Club is sponsoring an ice fishing derby today (Saturday) on Cottonwood Lake, north of Donnelly. It was reported that the lake has about 14 inches of ice.

Genevieve M. Swenson passed away on Jan. 2. Family members who survive her include a nephew Tim Root and his family.

Freda Melchert of Alexandria passed away on Jan. 9. Survivors include her son Dennis (Jan) Melchert and grandson Mike (Lisa) Melchert.

Congratulations to Matt Flogstad who was recently appointed the chief of police in Hancock.

En route to Elbow Lake on Jan. 6 I stopped at the Barrett Care Center to say hi to my cousin Bev and Esther Cline. After concluding my business in Elbow Lake I traveled to Hoffman stopping in to see Elroy Frank at his business. I then stopped at Hoffman Home to visit with Marvel Wagner before traveling to Alexandria where I visited with a friend in the Bethany Home.

Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended the funeral services for Millie Asmus. We also attended the showing of the move "Courageous" at the Morris Evangelical Free Church on Jan. 8.

Andy Brevig and I attended the Stevens County Republican party meeting in Morris on Jan. 9. The next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 30. Stevens County Republican precinct caucuses will be held at the Prairie Inn on Feb. 7. This is a change from what was announced earlier. The county convention is scheduled for March 2.

A good group of men from Good Shepherd got together at the church on Jan. 10 for a work night, tearing out the plaster in the basement ceiling. A second work night to continue working on that job is scheduled for Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. and if necessary an additional work night(s) to finish the job will be scheduled.

On Jan. 11 I stopped in to visit Mary Dripps in Morris. We talked alot about many Donnelly people we knew and her brother "Buzzy" who passed away last year. Later I stopped in to see Wally McCollar at his shop.
