It is beginning to look a lot like winter with several inches of snow this week -- enough to do some shoveling. Thanks to the good Samaritan who has cleared the sidewalk on our block several times this week. It is very much appreciated.

In parish news from St. John's/Kongsvinger: There will be joint services at St. John's on Jan. 29 at 11 a.m. with the Sunday school kids singing. St. John's will have their annual meeting after services with a pot luck dinner to follow. Kongsvinger will have their annual meeting on Feb. 5 following services at 11 a.m. with a pot luck dinner to follow. Services at St. John's will be at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 5.

From Good Shepherd Lutheran Church: the mission of the month are "Mission Mexico."

The second mission conference sponsored by the Augustana district of LCMC will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, hosted by Hosanna Lutheran Church in Watertown, S.D. from 9:30 a.m.to 12:00 p.m. For more information, e-mail mjrichardson@augustanadistrict.org or call 239-2618 or 287-3218.

There will be a contemporary worship night at the Morris Area High School auditorium hosted by the Morris Community Church tonight (Saturday) from 7-9 p.m.

The General Federation of Women's Study club is having a baby shower today (Saturday) from 1-3 p.m. at the Morris Public Library to benefit the LifeCare Pregnancy Center.

On Feb. 6 the Red Hatters will meet at Place To Be in Donnelly at 1 p.m. They will also have a Dutch treat meeting on Feb. 21 at noon at the Knotty Pine in Elbow Lake. Also on Feb. 6, the bookmobile will be in Donnelly at 3:30 p.m. by the bank; the city council will meet in the council chambers, and Rendsville 4-H will meet in the fire hall -- both at 7 p.m.

The Stevens County Republican party will meet at DeToy's in Morris on Jan. 30 at 6:15 p.m. For those who are interested they can come at about 5:30 p.m. for dinner and political discussion.

I recently learned of the death of Jonathan McHone of Crystal Lake, Ill. He was the co-pilot of a Marine helicopter that crashed in Afghanistan killing all on board. Among the family members who survive him are his parents, Ron and Sylvia (Smith) McHone and an aunt, Lola Smith of Donnelly, and grandparents Robert and Irene McHone of Alberta. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Grant and Helen Smith.

Congratulations to Shadow Olson of Donnelly who was named to the dean's list at Minnesota State University-Moorhead.

Congratulations to the following who won blue ribbons at the Morris Area High School science fair: Kourtney Geise, Riley Biesterfield, and Morgan Biesterfield.

Congratulations to the newest members of the MAHS National Honor Society: James Burke; Tom Holland; and MaKenzie Smith.

Alisha Roske and Kody Livengood of Cyrus are happy to announce their engagement. Alisha is the daughter of John and Holly Riley of Morris, and Russell Roske of Donnelly. A March 24 wedding is planned in Morris.

On Jan. 19 the Kopacek family and I attended the retirement party for Bill and Leona Telkamp in their office in Morris.

Eugene Anderson was the "cook" at Heartland Motors for their indoor sale that I attended on Jan. 20. He told me his family used to live on the Barrett ranch in the Donnelly area and he recently bought a house in town and he and his wife are in the process of moving into it.
