It has been very hot and humid this week. Fans, air conditioning and other cooling devices have been working overtime. Corn and wheat continue to look very good, but beans are lagging some.
In St. John's/ Kongsvinger parish news: there will be joint services at St. John's on July 8 at 8:30 a.m. and at Kongsvinger on July 15 at 10:15 a.m. David Holtz, executive director of Luther Crest, will be the guest speaker on July 15. The next communion service will be on July 22.
There will be a special meeting at Kongsvinger on July 15 following services regarding the shingling/ repair of the church.
Joint councils will meet on July 12 at 7 p.m. at St. John's. Please note the change of day.
St. John's WELCA will meet on July 10 at 1:30 p.m. This is a change of date.
From Good Shepherd Lutheran Church: David Patterson of Institute of Lutheran Theology will be giving a presentation during adult education on July 8. His topic is the "Word at Work" series starting this fall.
The Red Hatters will meet on July 20 at 11 a.m. the 4-H food stand in Herman during the Grant County fair.
The 23rd Annual Luther Crest Bible Camp quilt auction will be held today (Saturday) at the Bible Camp near Alexandria. Quilt review, silent auction, bake sale begins at 10 a.m. and live auction starts at 12:30 p.m.
The Donnelly Community Club will meet on July 9 at 7 p.m. at the Donnelly Hall.
The Runestone Telephone Association's annual meeting is July 11 at 7 p.m. at the West Central Area High School in Barrett.
The final game of women's softball will be played in Donnelly on July 12 at 7 p.m.
The Tri-County horseshoe league also has games every week, usually on Tuesdays at the courts by the Post Office.
United Farmers and Merchants State Bank will be celebrating their centennial with a variety of events on July 13 in Donnelly starting with an ice cream social and concluding with a fireworks display.
I have a little story to tell about the bank. My grandmother was Norwegian and she never learned to speak English so when she needed to do some business at the bank she went to see C.C. Erstad, the president who was Danish. The two languages were similar enough so they could understand each other.
There will be a benefit supper and silent auction for Tyler Smith on July 19 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Prairie Inn in Morris. He has a heart defect. Douglas D. Pedersen, of Ivanhoe, passed away on June 21. Survivors include his father Ken Pedersen, and uncle, Merrill Pedersen both of Alexandria and former Donnelly area residents. They owned and operated the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris for many years.
Adam Lesmeister and Kendra Gaebel proudly proclaim their engagement. Parents are Jerry and Jane Lesmeister of Morris and the late Jeanne Lesmeister, and Gary and Lori Gaebel of Becker, grandmother is Shirley (Anderson) Holman.
On Tuesday, July 3 at the bloodmobile, Kathy Eystad received her 8 gallon pin and Beth Heinrich received her 4 gallon pin.
The following Morris Area High School musicians received awards as part of the solo and ensemble contest: McKenzie Smith and James Burke in Jazz 1; McKenzie was also a member of the sax septet, the sax sextet and wind ensemble; Tom Holland and James Burke in a trombone quartet; Alyssa Uphoff-Gau and McKayla Smith in the wind ensemble clarinet choir; McKayla also was a member of the woodwind duet; Dalton Lupke and John Huebner in a brass ensemble; Pat Uphoff in a brass ensemble and a euphonium solo; Brandon Pry in a brass ensemble; Mark Dunn and Myles Smith in a brass quartet; Amber Recker in a flute trio; and Kristina Johnson in a flute duet.

Congratulations to Brooke Gillespie who won the Hustle award for grades 6-8 at the Tiger basketball camp, She also placed in the top three in several events of the kid's games during the Chokio Community Picnic.
A good crowd was on hand again for the Kiwanis Talent Show at East Side Park in Morris on June 28. The group, Tea Tom, took first place
On June 30, I attended the memorial service for Esther Pasche in Morris. That afternoon, I traveled to Herman to help do some painting at the fairgrounds.
After services at Kongsvinger on July 1, I visited Denny Anderson in his house in Donnelly. Later Jim and Lou Eystad and I visited Gary Weirs at Stevens Community Medical Center. As of this writing he continues to recuperate in Hoffman.
Jerry and Joan Kopacek spent an enjoyable time at Luther Crest Bible Camp Women's Week June 24-28. Bernice Erdahl was one of the lefsa makers Monday. Mason Dunn from "Xtreme Camp" helped lead the dining room grace Thursday. This year the women got to go zip-lining on the camp's new high ropes course. On the way home they stopped in Hoffman to visit Marvel Wagner, who said to say "Hi!" to everyone. Jerry and Joan will be back at camp to assist with their annual quilt auction.
