For the first time in about a month, we got some badly needed rain on Wednesday. The past week has been pretty much a broken record: very hot and dry.
From the St. John's/ Kongsvinger parish: There will be communion services at both churches on July 22.
The parish is coordinating the second annual block party to be held on July 28 at the Threshing Bee grounds in Donnelly. There will be a softball game at 2 p.m. between the fireman and the Rod and Gun Club members. After the game, about 4 p.m., supper will be served. A free will offering will be taken for the food shelf. For more information, contact the church office at 246-3211.
From Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Vacation Bible School will be held on Wednesdays in August. I'll have more details later.
The Grant County Fair in Herman continues today (Saturday) and concludes on Sunday.
The Erik and Karen Harstad family and Gulbrandson family reunion will be held at Kongsvinger Church of rural Donnelly on July 29 beginning with a potluck dinner at noon. The LTD motorcycle ride is scheduled for today (Saturday) starting at 10 a.m. in Appleton and coming through Morris about 3:30 p.m. For more information, call 320-333-8615.
The annual VFW Cancer Aid and Research Salad Luncheon will be Aug. 2 at Old # 1 Southside in Morris.

Katie Jean Kruckman was born to Joshua Kruckman and Kellie Pry on July 16. Grandparents are Dave and Cora Pry.
Noah Scott and Weston Joseph were born on July 3 in Fargo, N.D. to Charles and Amanda Moser. Grandparents are Greg and Dona Greiner, and great grandparents are Rollie and Jan Greiner.
Brianna Neuman and Benjamin James Summer wish to announce their engagement. Parents of the couple are Judy and Scott Neuman of Herman and Kathy and Wayne Summer of Alexandria. There will be an open house bridal shower for Brianna, on July 28 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Methodist Church in Herman.
Amy Day and Ryan Murray wish to announce their engagement. Parents of the couple are Gary and Bonnie Gulbrandson of Donnelly, Sue Murray of St. Paul and Bill Murray of Kansas City. Grandparents of the couple are Arlene Gulbrandson of Herman, Hazel Vestrum of Hoffman and Joe Osendorf of St. Paul.
On July 16, I watched part of the Babe Ruth championship game where Red defeated Black. Members of the Black team include John Huebner, Riley Biesterfield, and Brady Jergenson. Brody Jergenson was the bat boy, and his dad Rob was the coach. Vance Gullickson is the commissioner for the league.
I attended the summer field day at the West Central Research and Outreach Center on July 13. Mark Erickson is a member of the WCROC advisory board. Kendra Sperr and Natalie Johnston are among the summer interns working out there.
A good crowd was on hand on July 13 to help the United Farmers and Merchants State Bank celebrate its centennial. It was nice to see several former Donnelly area residents who returned for the event.
On July 14, Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended the Prairie Extravaganza at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife office, as well as other activities of Prairie Pioneer Days.
On Sunday, the Threshing Bee royalty and several members of the Donnelly Fire Department were part of the Prairie Pioneer Days parade.
Several current and former Donnelly area residents helped Elroy and Loraine Frank celebrate their silver wedding anniversary in Nelson on July 14.
