The weather is a bit redundant -- cooler than normal and very dry with again only a few scattered showers during the week. The crops are beginning to show some signs of stress especially in the low-lying areas. Despite the drought, I thought that the crops that were on display at the Grant County fair looked very good.
In St. John's/Kongsvinger Parish news: On Aug 2 there will be joint services at St. John's at 10:15 a.m. followed by a potluck dinner. This will be an opportunity for everyone to meet and visit with the Vacation Bible School counselors and staff. Please note that this a change from the summer worship schedule that was announced earlier. Everyone who is planning on attending VBS this year is encouraged to attend worship services that morning.
The parish will be participating in the Luther Crest VBS day camp to be held at Bethel Lutheran Church in Herman on Aug 2 - 6 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. There is still time to register for it. Contact either church office for more information.
The West Central Area Word Alone chapter is meeting today (Saturday) at Indherred Lutheran Church, north of Starbuck. The program will be a prayer and hymn service in preparation for the ELCA church- wide assembly in Minneapolis on Aug. 17 - 23. Coffee fellowship is at 9:30 a.m. with the program at 10 a.m. Please note that there will not be a local chapter meeting in September.
There are several golf events coming up in the area. The Southwest Minnesota Lutheran Men in Mission Golf tournament will be held on Aug. 3 at the Redwood Falls Golf Club. The St. John's/Kongsvinger parish golf outing will be held Aug. 9 at the Red Rock golf course near Hoffman at 2:30 p.m. A potluck dinner will follow. For non-golfers there will be other games and activities. The Luther Crest Golf Scramble will be held at the Geneva Golf Course in Alexandria on Aug. 10 at 10 a.m. Contact the parish office for more information on any of these events.
Trinity Lutheran Church in Alberta will be having a sweet corn feed on Aug. 2 from 5-7 p.m. behind the church.

The July edition of Meyer Mission News is now out. Extra copies are available in the narthex of each church. In it they talk about their return to Africa for their final year.
Tami Sperr will have a Kindermusic demo library on Aug. 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Morris Public Library. She will also have an open house at her studio in the Hosanna Worship Center in Morris on Aug. 20 and 27.
There will be a benefit spaghetti supper on Aug. 8 at the American Legion in Morris for Brian Flaten and his family of St. Cloud, formerly of Donnelly. Brian has cancer. His parents are Bruce and Linda Flaten and Joyce and Phil Gausman; his grandmother is Corrine Flaten. If you would like to furnish bars or help out call 246-3457. A silent auction will also be held in conjunction with the benefit. Items for the auction can be left at Jen Fults' house (200 E 4th St.) in Donnelly, across the street from St. Theresia's church. There will be an open house baby shower for Chrissy and Kelly Oaches on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 9:30 -11:00 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran church of Herman. Chrissy's parents are Janet Hoernemann and Ben "Skip" DeLong. Jr.; her grandparents are Ben and Yvonne Delong Sr. and Pat Hoernemann.
Benjamin and Jack Sabolik were born on Friday, July 10, 2009 to Greg and Marisa Sabolik. Grandparents are Kevin and Rhonda Asmus of Chokio and Ruby Sabolik of Kensington. Great grandparents are Kenny and Jeanne Asmus of Chokio; Barb and Don Rilley of Chokio; Kermit and Karen Stahn of Morris; Mayme Sabolik of Starbuck; and great-great grandma Marlys Alm of Morris, formerly of Donnelly. There will be an open house baby shower for them on Aug. 8 from 9-11 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chokio.
Congratulations to Kenton and Braden Long who earned several grand and reserve Championships on their 4-H projects at the Grant Co Fair. Their parents are Clyde and Brenda Long; grandparents are Adolph and Virginia Long.
Congratulations to the Morris 12U baseball team who recently earned a trip to the state tournament in Owatonna. Riley Biesterfield, Brady Jergenson, Bo Olson and Bo Gullickson are members of the team and Vance Gullickson is one of the coaches.
Congratulations to the Donnelly Fire Department for taking second place at the Morris fireman's water fights on Wednesday. Members of the team were Maynard Mau, Doug Cardwell, Walt Biesterfield, and Geoff Volker.
Pearl A. Anderson and I attended the 80th birthday party for Vernon Kruize at Sax's Café on July 24.
A good crowd took in some of the activities at the Grant County Fair in Herman last weekend. It was a nice way to spend a weekend. The pig races were especially fun to watch.
While in Herman for the fair, I stopped by the Pullman House to visit with Betty Hurlbut.
Crazy Days was held in Morris on Wednesday. I really enjoyed the MAHS robotic team, the P.L.A.I.D. Pillagers' demonstration.
The Stevens County Republican party held its monthly meeting at DeToy's in Morris on July 27. Volunteers are needed to help man the fair booth, Aug. 13-16. Anyone willing to sit in it for a couple of hours should call 795-2439 or visit their website at stevensgop.org.
