Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news.
Correction: William Lesmeister’s great-grandmother is Katie Lesmeister.
After a long dry spell, we finally got some much needed rain this week, with some very heavy rains on Aug. 6, accompanied by some golf size hail. Fortunately there was not much damage around the immediate area except for a lot of leaves in the streets. There were reports of a tornado in the area, but apparently it did not touch down.
In news from St. John’s/Kongsvinger: There will be joint services on Aug. 11 at 10:15 a.m. at St. John’s and on Aug. 18 at Kongsvinger. Services on Aug. 25 will be under the big top tent, on the Threshing Bee grounds.
There are two upcoming bridal showers at Kongsvinger. The first is for Audrey McNally, bride to be of Steve Larson, today (Saturday), from 10 a.m.-noon. Steve's parents are Don and Algene Larson, and his grandmother is Bertha Larson. The other is for Amanda Werk, bride to be of Sean Sorteberg, on Aug. 17 from 10 - 11:30 a.m. Amanda’s parents are Randy and Louisa Werk and her grandparents are Glen and Gertie Werk.
From Good Shepherd Lutheran Church: Vacation Bible School will held on Aug 14, 21, 28, from 6-8 p.m. For more information, call 585-6868 .
There will be a Bible study on Revelations every Wednesday at 9 a.m. This is open to everyone in the community.
The Donnelly Community Club will have a meeting on Aug. 12 at 7 p.m., as we put the finishing touches on plans for the Bee. The Threshing Bee is Aug. 24 - 25 and our feature this year is gas engines. This week I will highlight Saturday activities. Events start with a pancake breakfast, then continue with a softball tournament, tractor cade, kiddy parade, (we are still in need of a coordinator for that event), kiddie tractor pull, antique tractor pull, corn hole double elimination tournament (new this year), coronation and concludes with a dance at the town hall.
Advance sale buttons are on sale at several Donnelly businesses, and the United Farmers and Merchants State Bank locations in Morris and Chokio. The website is http://www.donnellythreshingbee.com/ and has been updated. There is also a Facebook page.
Sunday events include an open air church service and the horse and pony pull.

Former Donnelly area resident, Rosie Sax, was named one of Grant County‘s outstanding senior citizens.
The Post 29 Legion baseball team was runner up at the state tournament. Team members include Mac Beyer, Bryce Jergenson, Tyler Henrichs, and Chandler Erickson. Mac was named to the All District 7 Legion tournament team
Brady Jergenson was named to the District 5 Veterans of Foreign Wars baseball all star game.
The 18U softball team finished third in their tournament. Becca Holland was a member of that team.
The 14U softball team won their tournament. Brooke Gillespie was a member of that team, and her mother Judy was the coach.
Savannah Aanerud was the button winner at the Stevens County fair for the trip to Hawaii.
Brody Jace Hommerding was born June 10 to Josh and Karrie Hommerding of Hancock. Grandparents are Gary and Marge Hommerding of Hancock, Dave and Kay Storck of Morris, John and Debbie Van Eps of Blaine. Great grandparents are Issy Foss of Hancock, Marion Hommerding of Melrose, Dorothy Storck, and Geesien Kill both of Morris.
John Thomas Horning was born on July 29, to Monica Lee and Matthew Horning of Ashland, Wis. Grandparents are Madeleine and Richard Lee of Denver, Colo. and Pearl and Tom Horning of Chokio. Great-grandparents are Mary Lee of Louisville, Ky., William E. Tewes of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Nancy and Roger Horning of Chokio.
Clara Foss of Hoffman passed away on Aug. 4. Survivors include her son Bob (Donna) Smith and family.
Mark Koepke and I attended the Willie's Super Valu parking lot party on Aug. 2 in Morris. Earlier in the day I attended the salad luncheon at the Old No. 1 Southside.
Kaylene and Megan Mecklenburg and the Threshing Bee royalty participated in the Flekkefest parade in Elbow Lake on Aug 3.
Mark Koepke and Pearl A. Anderson attended the corn and BBQ feed at the Legion on Aug. 3.
On Aug. 4, Mark and I attended the “Grilling for the Grant County Food Shelf” event in Herman. Upon returning to Morris we stopped to visit Cal and Jan Bumgardner. Mark’s foster dad, Stan Koepke, used to drive truck for him. On Aug. 6, we returned to Herman for the kid’s spring fling supper at the fairgrounds. Unfortunately the weather ended that event early.
On Aug. 5, Mark and I attended the open house wedding reception for Justin and Amanda Nelson. Earlier in the evening I attended the “Meet the Threshing Bee candidates” forum at the Donnelly hall.
Little Miss Candidates this year are: Chalee Eystad, (Jesse and Misty); Kylie Mau, (Maynard and Lori); Hailey Lesmeister (Casey and Danielle); and Abbigail Athey,(Chris, Rose) Threshing Bee Queen candidates include Lindsay Flogstad (Matt and Susan), and Brittany Cardwell (Doug and Muriel).
