Eagles beat Orphans to stay alive in 9C
Tanner Picht led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run and the Morris Eagles never looked back as they went on to beat the Hancock Orphans in Region 9C action on Sunday, Aug. 3 in Rosen.
Picht had two hits and Eric Asche hit a two-run homer in the fourth to extend the lead further.
The Eagles added three more runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-0, but Hancock got on the board in the ninth to prevent the shutout.
Asche was the offensive leader with three hits. Mitch Carbert added two hits to pace the Eagles.
Sam Mattson went eight strong innings on the mound, getting the win while scattering three hits and striking out eight.
The Eagles next play against Montevideo on Saturday, Aug. 9 at 11:00 a.m. in Rosen. Montevideo beat Ortonville 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth in the game after the Eagles on Sunday to continue its run in the playoffs. The winner of the Montevideo/Morris game will go on to play the Madison Mallards right after the game on Saturday with the winner clinching their spot in state.
