Eagles fall short of state
Try as they might, the Morris Eagles just can't get past Dumont. The local amateur baseball team fell to the Saints 10-4 Saturday in Ortonville for the third time in post-season play.
Dumont erased a 3-2 deficit with three straight two-out singles in the sixth inning to tie the game. Four big runs were tacked on in the seventh to put the game away. The Eagles scratched out a run in the eighth to cut the lead to three. Three unearned runs by Dumont in the bottom of the eighth sealed the Eagles' fate.
Eric Asche led the offense with two hits including a double. Overall, the offense mustered only five hits.
The Eagles finish a very successful 2009 season at 19-8.
The Dumont Saints then took on the Saints of Sacred Heart for the second time this week with the winner guaranteed a State Tournament berth.
Sacred Heart had lost to Milroy (34-3) earlier in the winner's bracket final in 11 innings .
Sacred Heart (16-13) defeated Dumont 15-4 in eight innings in the loser's bracket final Saturday to clinch a state trip.
Milroy earned the No. 1 seed from Region 9C in the upcoming State Class C Amateur baseball tournament by defeating Sacred Heart 5-0 Sunday. Sacred Heart will be the second seed from the region.
The tournament starts Thursday in Arlington and Gaylord.
Sacred Heart will play Region 2C champ Lamberton at 11 a.m. Saturday in Gaylord. The Yankees will play Hanska, the 2C runner-up, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, also in Gaylord.
