Field Day to feature 'Flower Power'
The 2010 Summer Field Day for the North Central Soil Conservation Research Laboratory is Thursday, Aug. 19.
This year's theme, "Renew Flower Power", highlights the ways in which ARS research is helping producers develop cropping systems which include new oilseed and alternative fuel crops.
The day begins at the Soils Lab, where participants will board buses for a tour of current research projects.
Stops on the bus tour include the Karl Retzlaff farm, where Retzlaff and Soils Lab scientist Sharon Papiernik will discuss soil restoration research being conducted. There will be two stops at the Swan Lake farm. Pat Peterson, Vice-President of Research and Development for Aveda will be presenting with Soils Lab scientist Russ Gesch on the oilseed research plots and double cropping. The other stop will featured producer Greg Fynboh and Soils Lab scientist Jane Johnson, who will discuss biomass production and removal on a field scale.
The day begins with coffee at 9:30 a.m. The bus tours begin at 10 a.m.
The Soils Lab is located at 801 Iowa Avenue in Morris.
The Soils Lab is internationally recognized as a leader in research to develop new oilseed crops for food, bioenergy and industrial products. The mission of the lab is to develop agricultural systems in the Midwest that are environmentally, economically and socially sustainable by providing knowledge and technologies for proper land, crop and seed management to enhance the biological, chemical and physical properties of soils and to improve environmental quality.
