Foss, Schmidt recognized by UMAC in men's basketball
The University of Minnesota, Morris men's basketball team was awarded with a pair of honors as the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) announced the annual all-conference teams.
Derek Schmidt led the Cougars all season, and led the way again, earning First Team All-UMAC honors for the first time. It is his second consecutive all-conference laurel, as he was named to the second team last season.
Joining him was Brendon Foss who earned Honorable Mention All-UMAC honors, while also landing on the All-Defensive team.
Schmidt led the Cougars in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.3 and 5.9 per game respectively, while sixth in scoring (15.6) and 12th in rebounding (5.7) in the UMAC during the conference season. The only senior on the first team, he capped his Cougar career by scoring in double figured in 22 straight games, which included three double doubles along the way.
After scoring 18 or 19 points six times during the season, he finally hit the 20-point mark in the season finale, as the Cougars closed the regular season with a win over Northland.
Right behind Schmidt in both scoring and rebounding all season long was Foss, who is one of just two non-senior or juniors across all teams honored. The only sophomore on both the Honorable Mention team and All-Defensive Team, Foss averaged 10.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game on the season. In conference play he was even better scoring 11.4 points with 6.2 rebounds per game, respectively to rank 17th and eighth.
Additionally, his 25 blocks led the team while his 16 in UMAC play was third best in the league.
Logan Orazem was given the UMAC Sportsmanship Award, for best portraying sportsmanship throughout the season. Orazem was the only player to start in every game for the Cougars this season, playing a team-high 28.5 minutes per game.
The Cougars finished the season 11-15 overall, with a 7-7 mark in the UMAC to place fourth. After moving on to their fifth straight UMAC Tournament, they fell 84-75 in the first round to regular-season champion Bethany Lutheran.
