Four Cougars receive UMAC softball honors

Four University of Minnesota, Morris softball players were recognized by the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Two received all-conference honors and two were named honorable mention. Of the four, three were named to the all-defensive team.

Bailey Jelle and Julie Rohling were both 1st Team All-Conference selections.

Jelle, a senior short stop, had a .400 batting average in 2009. She led the Cougars with 44 hits, including eight doubles and two triples. She also led UMM with 25 RBIs and scored 32 runs.

Rohling, a junior catcher, had a .294 batting average and scored 16 runs. From her position behind home plate, Rohling had 108 putouts while only committing eight errors all season.

Receiving an Honorable Mention from the UMAC were Diane Blommel and Elizabeth Leuty.

Blommel, a sophomore catcher/third base/ outfielder, scored 26 runs and had 28 hits, including three doubles and a home run.

Leuty, a sophomore outfielder, had a .379 batting average with 36 hits, including six doubles, four triples, and one homer. She led the Cougars with 33 runs scored and recorded 19 RBIs.

Blommel, Jelle, and Leuty were named to the 10-member, all-defensive team

The Cougars got the season started Feb. 27 at Marquette Mich. and wrapped it up on May 1 in Mankato.

The Cougars finished 2009 14-23 overall with a 12-9 conference record.
