Gary A. Gunvalson, age 56, of Kandiyohi, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Memorial services was on Monday, Sept. 21, at Ebenezer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kandiyohi. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Gary Allen Gunvalson was born Jan. 7, 1953, in Starbuck, the son of Vernon "Tobby" and Lois (Amerson) Gunvalson. He grew up in Cyrus and graduated from Cyrus High School in 1971. He moved to Willmar and attended Willmar Community College, graduating with a degree in business. He also attended the Willmar Vo-Tech for mobile communications. Gary worked as a manager for several restaurants and bars in the area, including the Buccaneer and the Holiday Inn.
On May 18, 1986, he was married to Nancy L. Bruggers and they made their home in Willmar. In 1996, they moved to Kandiyohi where they have resided since. Gary was empolyed for over 15 years at West Central Steel retiring in 2006 due to his health. He has been an active member of the Ebenezer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kandiyohi since 1986, serving on the church council and cemetery committee, as an usher and working with the youth group. He was also involved in his community as a member of the Kandiyohi Men's Club and actively involved in youth baseball. He worked on the committee to improve the ball fields in Kandiyohi and just lent a hand when it was needed. He took great pleasure in helping anyone in anyway and was always a great friend to anyone who needed it. He enjoyed grilling, cooking, gardening, going to baseball games and taking his boys to different baseball stadiums. Gary's sense of humor will be one of the things that will never be forgotten and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife: Nancy Bruggers of Kandiyohi; two sons: Tobin Gunvalson of Fargo, N.D., and Jason Gunvalson of Kandiyohi; his mother: Lois Gunvalson of Alexandria; five brothers: Robert (and Charlene) Gunvalson of Willmar, William Gunvalson (and Patty Carlin) of Minneapolis, Jeffrey (and Diane) Gunvalson of St. Lucia Island, Dennis Gunvalson (and Richard Bay) of Sacramento, Calif., Kevin (and Karen) Gunvalson of Alexandria; three sisters: Linda Franke of Oakland, Calif., Nancy Gunvalson of Moorhead, Vicky Gunvalson of San Francisco, Calif., and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father: Vernon "Toby" Gunvalson and a son, Tyler Gunvalson in 1990.
