Gertrude D. Zurn, 90, of Callaway, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes.

Gertrude Delores Rohr was born to Nicholas and Mabel (Hancock) Rohr on June 10, 1917 in McHugh, Minn. She attended District 22 School and was a 1935 graduate of Detroit Lakes, High School. Gertrude attended teacher training in Wadena, and graduated in 1936. She taught in several Detroit Lakes rural schools. She married Lawrence H. Zurn on June 10, 1941 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes. They farmed in Riceville Township, near Callaway, where they raised their family. They retired in 1975 and spent their summers in Callaway and winters in Deming, N.M., until 2000.

Gertrude entered St. Mary's Nursing Center in January 2003. Lawrence died in 2006.

She was active in Assumption Catholic Church, the Christian Mothers, the American Cancer Society, Home Extension, and P.T.A. She taught religious education was a 4-H leader.

Surviving Gertrude are her children, Sylvester "Red" Zurn of Callaway, Bill (Karolyn) Zurn of Callaway, Anthony "Tony" (DelRae) Zurn of Detroit Lakes, Diantha Nilles of Carrington, N.D., Kathaleen (David) Zeise of Deer Creek, Minn., Althea (Joel) Boom of Kindred, N.D., and Mary Jo (David) Brunner of Detroit Lakes; 17 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; a brother, Norbert (Vivian) Rohr of Bluffon, Minn.; and a sister, Winifred Jenson of Detroit Lakes.

In addition to her husband, Lawrence, Gertrude was preceded in death by a brother, Ted, and four sisters, Margaret, Florence, Dorothy and Eleanor.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28 at Assumption Catholic Church in Callaway. There will be a Parish Vigil at 7 p.m., followed by a Christian Mothers Rosary at 7:30 p.m., also at the church. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the start of services on Saturday.

A mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29 at Assumption Catholic Church in Callaway, with the Rev. Joseph DeCrans officiating.

Memorials are preferred sent to Hospice of the Red River Valley or the American Cancer Society. The David-Donehower Funeral Home of Detroit Lakes has been serving the family.
