In an exciting conclusion to the 2011 West Central Conference South Tournament, Tiger junior Zach Gibson defeated Brandon Schmitt of Dawson-Boyd/Lac Qui Parle Valley to win the 285-pound title.

The two are not strangers. Gibson beat Schmitt in overtime during the Wabasso duals early in the season and then Schmidt pinned Gibson during their last meeting at Lac Qui Parle.

The third meeting was a battle. The championship was tied at 0-0 after the first period. In the second period, Schmidt went up 2-0 after a stalling call and an escape. Then Schmidt was called for stalling himself making it 2-1 going into the third period. Gibson got an escape and then a huge takedown to go up 4-2. Schmidt then got an escape and that is how the match ended.

The two aren't done yet though. More than likely they will be seated No. 1 and 2 in the section tournament later in Feb.

In other action for the Tigers, junior Tim Ostby defeated Alex Steffel of BOLD to capture third place at 152. Ostby lost to Cody Weeding of DB/LQPV 9-3 in the semi-finals.

Also in the third-place match, sophomore Connor Metzger was pinned by Taylor Lundebrek of Minnewaska at 160.

Senior Ryan Beyer was also pinned in the third-place match at 189. His opponent was Jon Solum of Paynesville. Earlier, Beyer was part of one of the most exciting matches of the tournament, nearly upsetting the No. 1 seed at 189. Lane Mitchell of DB/LQPV came into the tournament 25-2, but Beyer had him down 5-3 with less than a minute left in the 3rd period. Mitchell turned Beyer for a 3-point near fall to move into the finals. Beyer is the lone senior for the Tigers.

Also placing for the Tigers was freshman Myles Smith, fifth at 125. He defeated Jake Bednar from Montevideo 12-3.

Next up for the Tigers will be the Big Ole Tournament in Alexandria this Saturday.
