Gilbert C. Hoogendoorn, age 82, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009 at Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls, S.D. Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m., Wednesday at Netherlands Reformed Church, Sioux Center, Iowa. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley, Iowa. Rev. H. Hofman will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley, Iowa.
Gilbert C. Hoogendoorn was born June 9, 1927 to John and Sadie (Van Abbema) Hoogendoorn in Lester, Iowa. He attended the Allison Twsp School #4. Gilbert was united in marriage to Cornelia Vanden Brink on March 1, 1950 in Alvord, Iowa. Gilbert worked as a hired man on farms near Larchwood, Iowa and began farming near Kanaranzi, Minn., later moving to the Lester, Iowa area where he farmed for 37 years. Gilbert semi-retired by Lester in 1989 but still helped on the farm. He was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Church.
Gilbert is survived by his wife, Cornelia; three sons: Jerald Hoogendoorn of Rock Valley, Iowa, Marlin (Debra) Hoogendoorn and Dennis (Joan) Hoogendoorn all of Rock Rapids, Iowa; three daughters: Linda Rich of Bel Air, Md., Sheryl (Greg) Steuk of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa and Connie (Glenn) Vande Kamp of Lester, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Wanda Hoogendoorn of Larchwood, Iowa; 24 grandchildren including Dustin (Andrea) Hoogendoorn of Inwood, Iowa (formerly of Morris); 16 great-grandchildren; brothers: Alvin (Arlene) Hoogendoorn of Rock Valley, Iowa and Theodore (Barb) Hoogendoorn of Rock Rapids, Iowa, sisters: Margie (Marvin) Vanden Toorn of Grand Rapids, Mich., Sadie (Albert) Schelling of Orange City, Iowa and Mary Ann (Frank) Wynia of Rock Rapids, Iowa; brothers-in-law: Willie Davelaar, Arie Van Veldhuizen both of Rock Valley, James Burnett of Omaha, Neb. and John (Lois) Vanden Brink of Montevideo; sisters-in-law: Peggy Hoogendoorn of Rock Valley, Iowa and Johanna Van Voorst of Sioux Center, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gary Hoogendoorn; infant brother, John Hoogendoorn; brother, John B. Hoogendoorn; sisters: Joan Van Veldhuizen, Henrietta Davelaar and Nellie Burnett.
