An experienced I Can Camp! crew will teach participants basic camping skills such as setting up camp, starting a fire and cooking outdoors. The workshop includes exciting outdoor activities such as night hikes, wildlife watching, fishing and geocaching. Tents, air mattresses, cook stoves, firewood and other camping gear are provided, so participants need only bring their personal items, groceries, and a sleeping bag or bedding.

The I Can Camp! program is part of an ongoing effort by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to get more people outdoors. The DNR offers a series of skill-building workshops that introduce camping, fishing, paddling, climbing and archery to the next generation.

The Division of Parks and Trails created these programs in response to recent research that points to declining participation in outdoor recreation by young families. After hearing focus groups of parents say that they lacked outdoor skills, the DNR created a series of workshops with an emphasis on making outdoor adventure easy for beginners. The workshops were made possible with funds from the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment.

The workshop costs $35 for a family of up to six people. Registration is required; call 866-85PARKS or visit stayatmnparks.com and search for I Can Camp! Workshops under "Park Name" to reserve a spot.

A daily vehicle pass will be provided as part of the workshop fee, or participants may buy an annual Minnesota state parks permit for an additional $20.

For more information, visit the I Can Camp! homepage or contact the program by calling 651-259-5577 or emailing ican.camp@state.mn.us.
