Habitat for Humanity looking to build in Hancock in 2015
Habitat for Humanity of Prairie Lakes, Stevens County Chapter is hoping to be able to build a house in Hancock in the summer of 2015. It all hinges on whether or not they can raise enough money and if a partner family can be found.
There are three things necessary to become a partner family. The first is that the family is living in a rental unit in substandard conditions. Things that could make it substandard are: the house may have bad wiring, a bad heating system, water in the basement, mold, bad plumbing, lead paint hazards, or the lack of space for the number of occupants. Horrendous heating bills because of insufficient insulation may be another factor.The second requirement is that there is an income in the family. Contrary to what many people seem to think, Habitat for Humanity does not give houses away. The family pays their mortgage payments every month just like everyone else. What Habitat does do, is to charge no interest and to make the payments low enough so the family can meet their deadlines. Along with having an income, they check the financial background to make sure there are not too many outstanding bills. Habitat for Humanity does not want to partner with a family and then find that they can't meet their payments. They work with families on budgeting and being financially stable.
The third requirement is that the family be willing to partner with Habitat for Humanity. Being willing to accept help in financial matters and even parenting if need be is part of partnering. Partnering also means that they are required to put at least 300 hours of sweat equity into building their home. They help with fundraising as well as building. They don't have to know how to build a house and neither do any of the volunteers who come to help. Part of Habitat for Humanity is teaching the new homeowner how to do things so that they can keep their house in good repair. The volunteers also learn a lot when they work on the house beside people with experience.
What Habitat for Humanity needs in order to build in 2015 is someone willing to volunteer to manage the build site. A retired contractor would be ideal or a not yet retired contractor who would be willing to put enough time into the building. It would be nice to have someone who knows what they are doing to take charge of each portion of the building (basement, capping, framing, roofing, etc.) They would not have to do all the work but they would have to instruct the volunteers on how to do it.
Any donation of time, materials, or money will be greatly appreciated. At this point Habitat for Humanity has about $24,000. in the bank. They need at least another $55,000. to build this house.
