Hancock Bits and Pieces
The Hancock Senior Citizen's Club, composed of about 40 members, formed on Feb. 10, 1971. They met twice a month in the old VFW Club. In December 1976, the City of Hancock purchased the old post office/bank building in an auction from Stevens County with the intent to lease it to the Senior Citizen's for a permanent center. At that time the Senior Citizen's requested funding from the Tri-County Older Americans organization. They requested funds of $1,000, of which the seniors matched for remodeling to include a new furnace, roof repair, electrical wiring, plumbing, floor covering and interior painting. They were granted the funding. They entered into a lease agreement with the City of Hancock on Sept. 13, 1977 for 99 years at a charge of $1 per year.
The Senior Citizen's held many fund raisers and built an addition to the center in 1986 at which time the lease agreement was amended to include this property as it was on property of the City of Hancock.
There have been many events held at the center over the years working with the Stevens County Board on Aging such as driver recruitment, blood pressure clinics and other types of outreach programs. At one time they offered meals at reduced cost to seniors, but due to lack of money to keep it going, the program was removed from the center.
They held their pot lucks and meetings every month and over the years for a fund raiser served meals on the 4th of July.
It was open to public to purchase coffee and other goodies at a small charge. Card playing, puzzles were put together and just visiting were some of the activities over the years.
Today will be the last day for the seniors to meet in their facility as it will be razed to make room for the new bank. They will continue to meet at the Hancock Community Center until a new place is found for them.
The furnishings except for a few items will be sold at an auction, the date to be announced.
So it is with some remorse to see the building gone, but we are glad to see new progress in our community as well.
Have a good day!
