County fair season is here. Last week we went from the Beltrami Co. Fair in Bemidji, where my husband judged, to the Pipestone Co. Fair in Pipestone where the Bobendrier grandsons showed. The Pipestone fair has huge livestock shows, but none has better food and entertainment than the Stevens Co. Fair. All of this activity is leading up to the big daddy of them all, the Minnesota State Fair. County fair time is many different things to many people. Of course there are all the exhibits by 4-Hers, Open Class and Homemakers. Working in the foodstand was always an adventure and maybe a carnival ride shared with a boyfriend was a big deal---my son, who always got sick on the carnival rides, actually got engaged to be married on the top of the ferris wheel.
I love the mini doughnuts, corn dogs, and vegetable soup at the food stand, pork chop on a stick, the wrestler's French fries, cotton candy, and the steak sandwiches. At the state fair you have to have the cheese curds and Aunt Martha's cookies. My kids also loved the state fair (as did my parents, who although they went very few places, camped at the state fair grounds and took in the fair). When my daughter was going to college near there she spent all ten days at the fair working for the Gopher Dairy Club and she also met her husband at the fair. For me entering the fine arts show at the Minnesota State Fair is a big deal. The competition and jurying process is tough but when you do get in you feel it is a big accomplishment. My husband, of course, continues to spend his day in the hippodrome taking in the Open Holstein show which is now classified as a national show.
Last year we got a book here in the library called "Minnesota State Fair: an Illustrated History". This year we have another one called "State Fair-The great Minnesota Get-Together." Both of these books are so fun to look at, whether you are reminiscing about fairs past or gearing up for the fair yet to come. Have fun at the fair and come look at or check out our books!!
See ya at the Library!!
