Now that Thanksgiving is over and everyone has their fill of turkey and pumpkin pie, here is a new twist for when the weather gets cold. I talked to a friend of mine who lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. After I hung up the thought came to me about Cincinnati Chili.

CINCINNATI CHILI

1 large onion chopped

1 pound extra-lean ground beef

1 clove garlic, minced

1 Tbpn chili powder

1 tsp. ground allspice

1 tsp. ground cinnamon

1 tsp. ground cumin

1/2 tsp. red (cayenne) pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa or 1/2 ounce grated unsweetened chocolate

1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce

1 Tbsp cider vinegar

1 (16-ounce) package uncooked dried spaghetti pasta

Toppings (see below)

In a large frying pan over medium high heat, saute onion, ground beef, garlic, and chili powder until ground beef is slightly cooked. Add allspice, cinnamon, cumin, cayenne pepper, salt, cider vinegar, and water. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, 1 1/2 hours. Remove from heat.

Cook spaghetti according to package directions and transfer onto individual serving plates (small oval plates are traditional).

Ladle chili over spaghetti and serve with toppings of your choice. Oyster crackers are served in a separate container on the side.

Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Cincinnati chili lovers order their chili by number. Two, Three, Four, or Five Way. Let your guest create their own final product.

Two-way chili: Chili served on spaghetti

Three-way Chili: Additionally topped with shredded Cheddar cheese

Four-Way Chili: Additionally topped with chopped onions

Five-Way Chili: Additionally topped with kidney beans

Now for desert.

BUTTERFINGER/ BANANA CAKE

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a yellow cake mix as directed on package and blend in 3 to 4 mashed bananas and 3 large Butterfinger candy bars (crushed). Place in a lightly greased 8x13 pan and bake as directed on your cake mix. Frost with your favorite chocolate frosting and sprinkle a crushed Butterfinger candy bar over the top.

Tom and Margaret Cunningham's son, David, of Milwaukee, Wis. spent last week with his mother. Thanksgiving day guests at the Margaret and Tom Cunningham home were the Paul Cunningham family of Fergus Falls, the Jon Cunningham family, the Brian Meyer family of Brandon S.D., and the Gregg Cunningham family. Also girlfriends and boyfriends of the families. All the girls brought food and goodies and a wonderful, blessed Thanksgiving was had by all. Margaret was a Sunday dinner guest at the Gregg Cunningham home.

Genevieve Dosdall spent last week in Woodbury with her daughter and son-in-law, Bev and Richard Boyer. She and her family all enjoyed Thanksgiving Day together. Friday they held their family tradition with all the girls getting together to start baking Christmas cookies. June Pearson also rode along with them. Saturday, Ray and Gary Meyer came to visit and reminisce about many good old times and memories.

Vida Huntley spent an early Thanksgiving at the Gary Huntley home in Montevideo on Nov. 22. She had a wonderful time with the triplets and other children and family. On Thanksgiving she was a guest at the Ilene and Alan Burnham home in Morris. They had a very large group and a good time was enjoyed by everyone.

Guests at Jan and Bruce Malo home Thursday evening were daughter and family Barb and Mark, Stephen and Adie Gausman of Edgerton, Wis. Their grandson made a special shrimp dinner for them. On Friday night Mark's parents Tony and Donna Gausman joined them for supper in Morris. They celebrated their November and December anniversaries together. On Saturday they all drove to Maplewood to their son Boyd's to enjoy Thanksgiving Day together.

James and Loraye Backer went to their son, James, on Sunday to drop off Flat Stanley for their granddaughter Payten's school project.

Robert and Barb Valnes were Sunday evening guests at the Robert Nohl home.

Jamie, Korrin and Tristyn Erdman spent Saturday night at the Stan and katie Erdman home. Added Sunday guest were Tammy and Jaedyn Marquart. They all enjoyed an early Christmas celebration with the Erdman family at the Prairie Inn in Morris.
