Ignorant comments made regarding homosexuality
During this last year, I have been reading with fascination the ongoing debate in this newspaper concerning homosexuality, first as the marriage amendment was up for vote, and now as Representative Jay McNamar supported legalizing marriage equality. Recently, some exceptionally ignorant comments were made concerning this issue.
Two weeks ago, Dr. George Jay stated: “Nature always eventually rejects these types of novelties” [referring to gay marriage and problems that “lawmakers” create]. First of all, homosexuality exists in over 1,500 species, and if these species are dying out it is because of human extermination of these creatures’ lives or their habitat and not because of their homosexual habits. Secondly, if nature rejects unnatural “novelties,” then why haven’t humans been wiped off the earth for creating such items as plastic, roads and skyscrapers? I am certain that when this earth was created, an interconnected network of roads, cities, and bridges was not present, and hence, they are unnatural. But that doesn’t mean that these infrastructural necessities can’t benefit society. Indeed, without them, we wouldn't have a society at all.
In last week’s paper, a letter stated that “[McNamar] endorsed legalizing and legitimizing a behavior which Jesus…calls sinful and detestable.” In fact, Jesus says not a single word throughout the Bible about homosexuality. However, he does say:
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39)
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12)
