Jail site gets OK from city
A possible sight for a new law enforcement center nudged ahead Monday night.
The Alexandria City Council gave its support to a site the Douglas County Board is pursuing east of the County Road 45/Interstate 94 intersection, south of Highway 27 West.
Last month, the county board asked the city to take a look at Ben Zacher's 91-acre site to see if it was even feasible.
The city's law enforcement task force recommended that the site was acceptable and the council agreed, voting 4-0 to send a letter to the county supporting the site.
Council member Sara Carlson, who also serves on the task force, noted that the city wants to continue to partner with the county in building a law enforcement center/jail that would house both the sheriff's office and the police department.
At the end of the meeting, county commissioner Dan Olson noted that the county is scheduled to discuss the jail site next week, which will give the city enough time to draft the letter of support.
