Johnson and Ostby make finals in Paynesville
The Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta wrestlers had five wrestlers place top three and came in fourth as a team at the Paynesville Bull Dog Tournament on Friday, Jan. 10. On Tuesday, Jan. 14, the Tigers lost 44-27 to host West Central Area.
The MAHACA Tigers competed in the Paynesville Bull Dog Tournament on Friday, Jan. 10.
The Tigers had two wrestlers in the finals. Senior Dillan Johnson captured the 138 pound weight class and Sophomore Travis Ostby finished in second place at 132 pounds.
The Tigers also had three third place finishers: seniors Alec Gausman at 220 pounds and Myles Smith at 145 pounds, and junior Matt Munsterman at 106 pounds.
The Tigers took fourth place as a team with 133.00 points. Watertown-Mayer won the championship with 217.50 points and Sartell was runner-up with 164.50 points.
No. 2 seeded Ostby’s trip to the finals started with pin over Logan Peterka of Rocori in 2:35. He then pinned Corey Jobe of Watertown-Mayer in 3:22. In the finals, Ostby met Class A No. 7 ranked Zach Scott of Holdingford. Scott defeated Ostby 10-4.
No. 2 seeded Johnson’s trip to the championship started with at fall over John Unterberger of Eden Valley-Watkins in 5:30. He then defeated Clem Gerads of Holdingford 2-0 by scoring a 2 point near fall in the third period. Johnson met the No. 1 seed, Cody Buermann of Rocori, in the finals and defeated him 5-1 to claim the title.
Munsterman defeated Max Court of Rocori 15-4 in his first round match. He then lost to Ryan Molitor of Sartell by a pin in 1:40, but defeated Kevin Robak of Holdingford 16-0 to get into the third place match. He then faced Max Court, again, and defeated him 9-1 for third place.
Smith defeated Joe Jobe of Watertown-Mayer 5-2 in his first match. He was then defeated 10-5 by Jake Knettel of Holdingford in the semi-finals. Next, he defeated Andrew Kerzman of Paynesville by a fall in 4:56 to get into the third place match. To claim third place, he defeated Zach Motschke of Sartell 6-2.
Gausman was in a bracket that was short a number of wrestlers. He received a bye in the first round as the No. 2 seed. He was then defeated by Nick Jenson of Sartell 10-3. After receiving another bye to get into the third place match, he defeated Troy Scheuble of Watertown-Mayer 18-1.
West Central Duel
The MAHACA Tigers took a short trip to Barrett to take on the West Central Area Knights Tuesday, Jan. 14. The Tigers came up short losing 44-27.
The Tigers were missing their only returning state entrant in Dillan Johnson, but the dual came down to some exciting matches that could have gone either way.
The Knights took the first four matches to jump out to a commanding lead and the Tigers just couldn’t get back into it. Christian Athey was pinned by Drake Swanson in 1:10 at 106 pounds. Munsterman then lost by a major decision to Jake Nohre 14-2 at 113 pounds. In a very exciting match at 120, freshman Jared Rohloff lost a close decision 2-0. Finally, at 126 pounds, junior Mitchell Ascheman appeared to have the advantage taking an early lead, only to see it fall apart in a 15-10 loss to Keaton Long.
Ostby finally got the Tigers on the scoreboard with a fall in 3:31 over Tyler Onstad at 132 pounds.
At 138 pounds, Trenton Nelson filled in for Johnson, the Tigers returning State entrant who was out sick. Nelson was pinned in 3:20 by Jake Larkin.
Smith then picked up another win for the Tigers with a 13-3 major decision over Kyle Mickelsen at 145 pounds.
Jerid Berning was defeated 9-1 by Royal Crow at 152 pounds and Steven Koehl had an early lead before getting pinned by Braeden Long in 5:19 at 160 pounds, making the score 32-10.
Then the Tigers staged a rally. Danny Tracy pinned Zach Salo in 1:37 at 170 pounds. Jordan Thooft won by a technical fall 16-1 over Koel Seifert at 182 pounds. Aaron Nelson pinned Trenton Teokamp in 1:05 at 195 pounds to make the score 32-27.
The Tigers were outmatched in the final two weight classes though. Junior Gausman was pinned in 3:31 by Hunter Fick at 220 pounds and Jacob Sperr was pinned by Buzz Miller in 1:20 at 285 pounds. The final score was 44-27 with the Knights taking the win.
Having three meets in a five day span, the Tigers are in the midst of a busy week and it will continue on Thursday, Jan. 16, pending the weather. The Tigers will host Benson and Paynesville for an A-B Triangular meeting. MAHACA will take on Paynesville starting at 5 p.m. Paynesville will face Benson on the mat starting around 6:30 approximately, and then the Tigers will hit the mat against Benson around 8 p.m. Then on Saturday, Jan. 18, the varsity will travel to the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Duals, which start at noon.
