Johnson wires field for night two NLRA win at Viking
After coming so close to scoring a win the night prior, Kensington, MN driver Zach Johnson dominated action during night two of Viking Speedway's annual NLRA Late Model double-header Sunday night at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. WISSOTA Modified rookie Josh Thoennes scored his second win in the past three week in the WISSOTA Modified A-main while Jeff Kluver picked up his first win of the year in the WISSOTA Super Stock finale. Jamie Thorstad garnered top honors in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified division while Andrew Bangsund sealed his 2010 track championship with a bittersweet win in the WISSOTA Street Stock A-main. Fans, pit crew members, and drivers from all over WISSOTA country convened at the steeply banked 1/2 mile for one last time during the 2010 regular season at Viking Speedway. The fans in attendance witnessed some tremendous Amsoil Dirt Track Series Racing, Viking Speedway style.
The first even of the evening belonged to the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds with 25 drivers making the call for the 15-lap main event. Travis Vanderby and Thorstad manned the front row starting duties as head flagman Mike Commerford dropped the green. Thorstad took the lead from the get go and field battled side by side behind. Thorstad looked strong out front while sixth starter Jeremy Kerzman quickly entered the top five. The ultra fast 1/2 mile saw a myriad of nice moves put on by the competitors with Kerzman continuing to move forward. Eleventh starter Scott Tofte looked to be the fastest car on the speedway as he moved up seven positions during the duration of the A-main to finish fourth. Kerzman moved into second in the ladder stages of the event but was unable to deny Thorstad his first WISSOTA Midwest Modified win of the season. Kerzman took home his second top five finish in as many nights coming home second ahead of Randy Laage, Tofte, and 10th starter Brian Haben. Matt Weisman, Vanderby, Mark Blom, Nick Bruder, and Todd Berg each turned in top 10 performances as well for the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. On the strength of a very strong season, Haben picked up the 2010 WISSOTA Midwest Modified Track Championship at Viking.
The WISSOTA Street Stock A-main was a wild one from the start sporting side by side racing and one very wild finish. With just a few laps remaining it looked as if David Goulet would take his first ever Viking Speedway win. On the final trip around, however, it appeared as if Goulet and Andrew Bangsund made contact sending Bangsund for a series of rolls. The scary role took center stage as track workers rushed to the mangled #70 of Bangsund. Bangsund was able to get out of the car and was immediately taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Bangsund was awarded the feature win and took the points title in the process with Shawn Wageman finishing in the second spot for the second time in as many nights. Chris Winter, Justin Vogel, and Justin Tammen were all members of the top five as well.
Alexandria, MN native Jeff Kluver led all 20 laps scoring the win during the WISSOTA Super Stock finale. Kluver, who had not scored a Viking Speedway win all season long, looked great during the duration of the event taking home top honors. Sixth starter Ron Host moved up four positions to finish in the second spot with eighth started Jeremy Jerve in third. Alan Johnson and Todd Carter each grabbed top five finishes as well for the WISSOTA Super Stocks, which boasted 27 competitors. Carter, Jeff Crouse, and Derrick Lemke all scored heat race wins for the WISSOTA Super Stocks. Although Kluver won the battle, Cory Tammen won the war as he was crowned 2010 Viking Speedway track champion in the WISSOTA Super Stock division.
For the second time in his last three starts, Josh Thoennes took home the feature win in the WISSOTA Modified division. Thoennes moved out front and held his line during the duration of the event taking home the win. Brooten, MN driver Dave Schroeder took home his best finish of the season with a strong second ahead of Hutchinson's Jamie Lemke. Eighth starter Dennis Bitzan continued his streak of consistent finishes with a tech shed visit in fourth followed Craig Christiansen, the final member of the top five. Dave Storck, Jay McDonald, Matt Smith, Ward Imrie, and 25th starter Jason Thoennes all picked up top 10 finishes as well during the final night of the regular season for the WISSOTA Modifieds. Jason Thoennes was crowned 2010 WISSOTA Modified Track Champion on the strength of two feature wins and one very steady season at the big 1/2 mile.
One night after finishing second to Jeff Wildung, Zach Johnson flipped the script taking the win during night two action in the NLRA/WISSOTA Late Model finale. Wildung, however, moved up from his row four starting spot to finish second ahead of fourth starter Shawn Kirwin. Long time veterans Joel Cryderman and Mike Prochnow looked strong during the event moving up several positions during the 25-lap affair. Cryderman started 11th and finished fourth while Prochnow started 15th and finished sixth. In the end, however, it was Johnson ahead of Wildung, Kirwin, Cryderman, and Ricky Weiss. Prochnow, Brad Seng, Scott Greer, 18th starter Cody Skytland, and Mike Johnson were all members of the top ten as well. On the strength of a very dominating campaign in 2010, Jeff Wildung was once again crowned track champion for the WISSOTA Late Models.
