Joile J. Johnson, age 69, Chokio, Minn., passed away Thursday, August 3, 2006, in her home near Chokio after a courageous battle against cancer.
Funeral services were Saturday, August 5, at 2 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chokio with the Rev. Mark Swanson officiating. Music was provided by organist Julene Amborn and vocalists Wayne Claassen and Melissa Fronning.
Burial was at Summit Cemetery, Morris, Minn. Honorary pallbearers were Joile's grandchildren. Active pallbearers were Roger Horning, Vernon Fischer, Ordell Ritter, Earl Blackwelder, Ted Horning, and Orville Raasch.
The Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt, SD, was in charge of the arrangements.
Joile Jean was born May 26, 1937, in Morris, Minn., to Carl and Lila (Thorstad) Stevenson. She was baptized July 17, 1937, at First Lutheran Church in Morris and confirmed June 17, 1951, at Zion Lutheran Church in Chokio. Joile attended rural school near Chokio through the ninth grade and graduated from Morris High School in 1955.
On January 18, 1957, Joile married Darrell C. "Bud" Johnson at the First Lutheran Church in Morris. They made their home in Chokio where Joile enjoyed being a stay at home mom. Joile was employed as a bookkeeper at the Citizen's Bank in Morris until she began raising her family. After her children were grown she was employed at Great Plains and later enjoyed working with the children as a special education paraprofessional at the Chokio-Alberta Public Schools.
Joile was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, the Chokio Study Club, Elizabeth Circle and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, horses, crocheting, listening to hymns, painting and reading. She especially enjoyed attending her children's and grandchildren's ball games. Joile will always be remembered for her smile and infectious giggle.
Survivors include her husband, Darrell "Bud" Johnson of Chokio; five children, Lori (Dean) Kolden of Mound, Minn., Karen (Tom) Lane of Rosholt, S.D., Kristi (Cal) Lillehaug of Clinton, MN, Liane (Jim) Claassen of Chokio, Minn., and Kirby Johnson (fiancée Jeni Kolden) of Alberta, Minn.; brothers and sisters, Shirley (Larry) Kleespies of Morris, Virginia (Bob) Selk of Faribault, Minn., Roger (Pat) Stevenson of Cold Spring, Minn., and Dennis (Lynne) Stevenson of Fridley, Minn.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mavis (Glen) Vorland of Chokio, Lorraine Awsumb of Morris, Phyllis Smith of Morris, Winston (Mayva) Johnson of Herman, and Shirley (Ken) Kasuske of Ashland, Neb.; twelve grandchildren, Lindsay Kolden (fiancé Ben Eaton), Lacey, Lexi, and Lauren Kolden, Baylie and Jakson Lane, Zackary Anderson, Jacob and Isaac Lillehaug, Lucas Claassen, Cody and Quinn Johnson; one great-grandchild, Emma Kolden; five step-grandchildren, Max Priem, Tom (Kelly) Claassen, Linda Claassen, Jason (Lisa) Johnson, and Dustin (Christy) Schmidgall; and one step great-grandchild Kyan Johnson.
Joile was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Lila Stevenson; parents-in-law, Carl and Dagna Johnson; and brothers and sister-in-law, Wanda (Ferdinand) Zamzow, Torgney Awsumb, and Dale Smith.
