Stevens County has a new County Attorney.

The County Board of Commissioners voted 4 to 1 on Tuesday to name Assistant Cass County Attorney Aaron Jordan to the vacant position at a starting annual salary of $99,900.

Commissioner Jeanne Ennen was opposed to Jordan's salary and voted against the resolution.

"we were getting a county attorney and an assistant for $107,000 with Charlie [Glasrud]. There are things Aaron is inexperienced in and I would like to see that number lowered."

Commissioner Ron Staples replied that that figure was negotiated with Jordan. He also noted that by contracting with the city of Morris for Jordan to serve as city attorney, the costs will further be decreased.

"I think our dollars spent as a county will be less by $15,000. I'm comfortable with it," Staples said.

Jordan plans to have an office in the courthouse, but exactly where in the courthouse has yet to be determined. County Coordinator Brian Giese said that there are several options. The Commissioners directed the building committee to bring their recommendation to the board's Aug. 2 meeting.

Jordan will start in the new position on Aug. 29. He will fill out almost 3-1/2 years remaining for the elected office.

Former Stevens County Attorney Charles Glasrud was elected to a four-year term last fall but this spring was appointed as a 8th Judicial District Judge.

Jordan is a North Dakota native who also lived in the Dassel and Cokato area. He is a 1998 graduate of Park University, in Missouri, and earned his law degree at William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul. He is a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Jordan was a Judicial Law Clerk for Judge Paul Nelson in Chippewa County from 2001 to 2004, and had a private law practice and was an Assistant Public Defender for the 8th Judicial District in Kandiyohi County from 2004 to 2008. He joined the Cass County Attorney's Office in 2008, working primarily on prosecutions.
