Legion opens season with win at Glenwood
Morris Legion Post 29 opened the 2011 season with an 8-2, eight-inning win at Glenwood on Monday.
Starting pitcher Sam Mattson and reliever Mitch Kill led Post 29, giving up just four hits in the game with Kill getting credit for the win.
Glenwood got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first and they added another in the third for a 2-0 lead.
Morris started a comeback in the fifth when Ethan Bruer reached on a one-out bunt single and he quickly stole second. After an out was recorded, Bruer went to third on a wild pitch and he scored when the throw from the catcher went into left field.
Morris tied the game in the sixth, again with some help from the Glenwood defense. Ryan Beyer reached on an error and he was replaced on the bases by courtesy runner Chandler Erickson. After Cole Riley was hit by a pitch, an errant pick-off attempt at first allowed Erickson to score from second to tie the game.
After Mattson pitched four strong innings, Kill came in to keep Glenwood scoreless and the game went into extra innings.
Post 29 scored six times in the top of the eighth for the win. C. Riley led off with a walk and after one out, Kill reached on an error by the second baseman and Riley came all the way around to score when the center fielder over-ran the ball as well. Brody Bahr then hit a long double to the gap in left center to score Kill and C. Erickson had a pinch hit single to score Bahr. Tyler Hansen doubled in C. Erickson and Alex Erickson reached on an error by the left fielder. Beyer then had an infield single which led to an overthrow of first, allowing both Hansen and A. Erickson to score the final runs.
Kill shut down Glenwood in the bottom of the inning and Post 29 left with the win and a 1-0 record in District action.
Hansen led Post 29 at the plate with a 3-for-5 night. Another key to the win was Morris playing errorless ball behind their pitching while Glenwood committed eight errors, all in the last four innings.
