Legion suffers first post-season loss
Alex Gay hit a two-out, two run single in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and BOLD went on to post a 6-3 win over Morris Post 29 in District 7-II Legion tournament action. The win puts BOLD into the championship game on Saturday, while Morris now takes on Sacred Heart tonight in Montevideo.
BOLD scored an unearned run off of Morris starter Eric Riley in the top of the first, but Post 29 came right back to tie the score in the bottom of the inning. Dusty Sauter was hit by a pitch with one out and scored on consecutive singles by Ryan Beyer and E. Riley. But with what would become a trend on the night, Morris stranded two runners in scoring position to end the inning. Post 29 stranded nine runners in the game as they outhit BOLD 10-7.
BOLD scored twice more (one earned) in the top of the second before Riley settled in, retiring 13 of the next 14 BOLD hitters to hold the score at 3-1. Morris hitters continued to get runners on base and had several hard-hit balls find the gloves of the BOLD fielders.
In the bottom of the sixth Cole Riley and Mitch Kill led off with singles and Travis Rinkenberger put down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. Morris finally got the clutch hit that they were looking for when Tyler Hansen lined a single to right center to score pinch runner Evan Schultz and Kill to tie the score at 3-3.
Kyle Athmann walked to lead off the top of the seventh and he went to second on a wild pitch, but Riley struck out the next hitter for the first out. Tate Neubauer then hit an infield single and stole second to put runners on second and third with just one out, but Riley induced a pop up from BOLD's number three hitter Shawn Dollershell for out number two. Gay then worked the count to 3-2 before lining a clean single to right to plate both runners. Gay came around on a passed ball and two wild pitches to close out the scoring.
E. Riley had three hits and Sauter and Kill two each to lead the Morris offense.
