Lemke breaks school record at True Team

On Jan. 17, the Morris Areas Stingrays traveled to Hutchinson to compete in the Section 3A True Team Championships. Over 200 swimmers from eight of the 13 teams in Section 3A attended and the teams finished as follows: Willmar, Melrose/Sauk Centre, Hutchinson, Fergus Falls, Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield, Detroit Lakes, Thief River Falls, and Morris. The top two teams will continue on to the True Team State Championships this Saturday.

A highlight for Morris was Stefan Lemke's new Morris Area boys' team record time of 1:49.84 in the 200-yard freestyle. (This eclipses Matt Lesmeister's 1:50.04 mark set in 2001.)

As a team, Stingray swimmers combined for seven season-best times and several new events, as well as two season-best relay times.

In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Mickey Cotter (50.77, backstroke), Brandon Pry (47.76, breaststroke), Vaughn Dieter (52.88, butterfly), and Roberto Gameiro (freestyle, 36.82) finished with a 3:08.23.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Lemke took first place with a career-best time of 1:49.84. He was followed by Gage Anderson's 2:30.29, a 1.55-second cut from earlier in the season, and Jason Rinkenberger's first attempt at this distance with a 3:10.54.

Roy Reese competed in his first 200-yard individual medley this season and finished in 2:51.23, a cut of over 26 seconds from his best time last year.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Austin Schieler led the Stingrays with a 25.51 in his first attempt in this event this season. He was followed by Jacob Erickson's 28.83, also his first attempt, and Gameiro's 37.05.

In the 100-yard freestyle, Schieler cut 2.10 seconds to finish with a 58.38. He was followed by Pry's 11.30-second cut for a time of 1:29.43 and Gamiero's 1:31.35.

In 500-yard freestyle, Lemke took his second first-place finish of the meet with a season-best time of 5:12.32.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Reese finished with a 1:14.41.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Dieter finished with a 1:56.62, in his first attempt in this event, and Mickey Cotter cut 4.15 seconds to finish with a 1:59.91.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Erickson and Mickey Cotter, in their first attempts in this event, finished with times of 1:45.30 and 1:45.38, respectively. Also Pry cut 13.2 seconds off his time in this event to finish with a 1:45.65.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Lemke (23.21), Reese (27.67), Anderson (28.16), and Schieler (25.58) finished with a season-best 1:44.62, good enough for 12th place. The team of Gameiro (37.46), Dieter (39.31), Rinkenberger (35.93), and Erickson (29.23) finished with a 2:21.93.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Schieler (58.89), Anderson (1:05.46), Reese (1:02.51), and Lemke (50.19) finished with their first sub-four minute time of the season with a 3:57.05, good enough for 11th place. The team of Dieter (1:30.44), Rinkenberger (1:29.09), Mickey Cotter (1:06.84), and Erickson (1:12.94) finished with a time of 5:39.31.

The Stingrays continue their travels with a dual meet at Sauk Centre on Tuesday.
