Letters contain false accusations, shift focus

Two weeks ago I reported on a presentation sponsored by the pro-gay community at the senior center in town ("A Talent for Misleading," Morris Sun Tribune, March 10.) The March 17 edition printed responses containing false accusations which shifted the focus away from the original topic, the claimed biblical rightness of homosexual-lesbian sexual practice. Let's get back on track.

Under the pretense of applauding my courage, Mr. Lackey put words in my mouth to equate me with pro-slavery bigots, in an attempt to rob my article of credibility. No one reading the entirety of the Bible and allowing God's Holy Word to speak can honestly conclude that God deems a segment of the populace deserving of enslavement. Only those who impose their prejudices upon the Bible could come away with such an understanding.

Curiously, it is pro-gay activists like Mr. Weiss who approach the Bible with preconceptions and twist the Word to suit their purposes- "making" it excuse, even support, gay and lesbian sexual activities.

As to Mr. Goodnough's letter, there are several statements that need correcting. Mr. Goodnough stated that cultural norms change; that the Christian church changes and grows in forgiveness and love. The church is to stand as a witness to God's enduring Word (Isaiah 40:6-8; I Peter 1:24,25), to share in Christian love the Law that shows us our sin, and the Gospel which shows God's love for us in sending Jesus to redeem us. Believers are then called to walk with God by faith, not to conform to the world around them. (Romans 12:1,2)

Mr. Goodnough spoke of "consensual sexual relations" as if consent between those engaged in the act makes it okay before God. Look at 1 Corinthians 6:9-11. Can you substitute any of the other sins mentioned here (or in the Ten Commandments, Exodus chapter 20) for homosexuality and claim that consent makes it okay? Adultery and fornication require consent of both parties, yet are condemned as sins. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 6:18-20, "Flee from sexual immorality...you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." Sexual immorality is ANY sexual practice outside the husband and wife, one man and one woman married relationship.

"Gay rights" is NOT a civil rights issue. People are born with a certain color to their skin, or a certain gender; these things are morally neutral. How you desire to practice sex is not morally neutral. Nor are people "stuck" being gay. The existence of ex-homosexuals and "L.U.G.s" (category, "Lesbians Until Graduation") attests to this fact. We are all born sinful, and face temptations to disobey God's holy will. Succumbing to temptations of this sort rather than another doesn't make it less than sin. (1 Corinthians 10:12,13)

Finally, it was stated that we should "seek understanding and drop the labels." Labels can be useful things. A bottle being labeled "poison," or having a "Mr. Yuck" sticker on it, has saved many from injury and physical death. How much more valuable labels can be when they help you know whom to trust or avoid when false teachings can lead to eternal death.

I again refer readers to the original March 10 article, and to our St. Paul's Lutheran Church website for a wealth of information on this subject.

Pastor Donald Main; Morris, Minn.
