Letter: Make an impact on hunger in July
The Stevens County Food Shelf is currently enrolled in the fourth annual “Open Your Heart to the Homeless and Hungry” challenge grant during the month of July, 2013. “Open Your Heart” will match donations to the Stevens County Food Shelf during the month of July, up to $5,000. The more funds the food shelf raises, the larger the matching grant will be. “Open Your Heart” raised over $1 million statewide last year with this grant and hopes to outpace that this year.
One in five Minnesota families face hunger each day in Minnesota, and 8,000 Minnesotans visit food shelves each day. In the first six month of this year, from January through June, 2013, the Stevens County Food Shelf provided food to 539 households (1,486 people). We distributed 42,231 pounds of food.
You can make an impact on hunger in Stevens County. The larger the donation, the more the grant from “Open Your Heart” will be. Donations can be mailed to Stevens County Food Shelf, 701 Iowa Avenue, Morris, Minn. 56267, or can be dropped off during business hours.
Volunteers are always needed at the local food shelf. If you would like to volunteer, call Lois at 589-3872 or Pat at 589-4376.
