Letter: Now is the time to support veterans' organizations

Email

If you have ever been helped by the G.I. Bill, Veterans Administration, Veterans Clinics, VA mortgage,  or any other way, because you are a veteran, that help did not come because of our kind-hearted government who thought it owed us something. It came because of veterans organizations, VFW, Legion, AmVets and so many other veteran groups who worked with Congress and the president to remind them what veterans gave up to keep this country free.

So, now it is time for us to make certain the veterans who served recently and are serving now get what others worked to get for us. The newer veterans deserve as much as we received and more for faithfully serving our country.

And it can only be done with veteran organizations working with others to make certain Congress helps those veterans. Many now have PTSD and other problems which need help, such as lost limbs.

And Congress and the President will only help our veterans if there is a strong force, such as the VFW, Legion, AmVets, and Sons of the Legion working to secure and keep those benefits.

If you are a veteran and don’t belong to at least one veterans’ organization, join now, and if you are a member, get a family member, friend, co-worker, to join.

In this area, we have the VFW, Legion, AmVets, Son of Legion, but nationwide, we have scores of other groups supporting our veterans. So, get involved, and that means anyone who have ever served. If you served overseas in time of war, the VFW awaits you. If not, there is the Legion, AmVets, and for others Sons of Legion. And the auxiliaries do so much for veterans; so, if you are eligible, join one of the auxiliaries.

I often read the funeral notices that this person was a veteran but did not belong to any veteran organization, and I ask why? Why was he/she not a proud member? So join and help our veterans. If not you, who?

The Morris Legion and auxiliary meet at 8 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month at the Legion. The Morris VFW meets at 7:30 p.m. the third Tuesday of the month in the lower level of Old #1. The Morris VFW auxiliary meets at 2 p.m. the third Tuesday of the month in the lower level of Old #1.

Commander, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5039 Morris
