Lions International Director to speak at Morris club's 70th anniversary
The Morris Lions Club will celebrate its 70th anniversary on Monday, May 18, at the Old No. 1 Bar and Grill Southside beginning at 6 p.m.
The event is for Lions members, past and present.
The event's speaker will be Lions International Director Debra Wasserman.
Wasserman, from Faribault, was elected to serve a two-year term as a director of The International Association of Lions Clubs at the association's 91st International Convention, held in Bangkok, Thailand, in 2008.
Wasserman is a retired school social worker and a member of the Faribault Lions Club since 1992.
Wasserman has held many offices within the association, and has received numerous awards, including the University of Minnesota Lions Eye Bank Helen Keller Award, the International President's certificate of appreciation and the International President's Award.
In addition to her Lions activities, Wasserman has been active in numerous professional and community organizations, including the Minnesota State Academy for the Blind Foundation board of directors, the Minnesota Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped advisory board and the Association of Rehabilitation and Education.
The Lions were founded in 1917, in Chicago. Melvin Jones, an insurance executive, was the organizer. Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become "Knights of the Blind," at their convention in 1925. Sight conservation has been the main program of the Lions ever since. However, many new programs have been added over the years.
The Morris Lions Club was chartered in 1939 with 28 members. The club has been performing humanitarian services in the community and worldwide. The Morris Lions Club is part of Lions International, which is comprised of over 1.3 million members, 45,000 clubs in 205 nations and geographic areas of the world.
The Morris Lions Club meets the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 6:15 p.m. in the lower level of the Old No. 1 Bar and Grill.
