Local racers tear up the track at Viking Speedway in Alexandria
Every Saturday from the end of April through Labor Day, a migration of trailers head to Alexandria for a night of racing the half mile oval dirt track at Viking Speedway.
Many of those racers are from the Morris area. The Saturday, Aug. 9 races were sponsored by Bob Cat of Morris and Hot Rod Radio. That evening's races featured drivers from Morris in three of the WISSOTA sanctioned classes; Late Models, Modifieds, and Midwest Modifieds.
In the Midwest Modified class Matt Smith of Morris nearly captured the checkered flag, placing second in the feature race. Fellow Morris Area High School student Brian Haben of Holloway was right behind him in third place.
Jamie Thorstad of Morris finished the feature in 10th place, while Kyle Koehntop, also of Morris, took 15th of 25 cars.
Haben and Smith are currently second and third, respectively, in the Midwest Modified point standings.
In the Modified division Mike Storck of Morris took fourth place. In the same feature race, Terry Engebretson of Cyrus took ninth and Dave Storck of Morris finished in 12th place.
Engebretson is sitting in third place in Modified points, while Dave Storck is in the seventh spot with Mike Storck only trailing him by three points.
The only local racer in the Late Model class, Shawn Kirwin, was knocked out of the race by points leader Jeff Hinkemeyer, but still took a 16th-place finish. Kirwin is currently fourth in Late Model point standings. There are 46 racers in that class at the Viking Speedway.
