Local residents extremely helpful for TV home project
The volunteer list for the Fargo-area "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" project is now extremely filled, a spokeswoman for the builder said.
By midday Wednesday, 3,334 people had signed up to help makeover an area family's home within a week and later have it shown on ABC's popular program. With materials suppliers and tradespeople included, the build reached its goal of 4,000 volunteers, said Megan Messer of Fargo's Heritage Homes.
"Right now, we are full. We're going to double- and triple-check to be sure we aren't missing anything," Messer said.
"A huge thanks to the Fargo-Moorhead community. I think we've blown away some 'Extreme Makeover' staff with this," she said.
Openings for some trades positions, such as carpenters, finish carpenters and framers, are still on the website www.extrememakeoverfm.com as backup workers in case rain delays work that then must quickly be made up, Messer said.
Meal donations from restaurants are still needed to make sure work crews are fully fueled during the construction, she said.
People who don't get a volunteer shift can stop by the build site as a spectator and cheer, Messer said.
"That motivation is huge. We do need spectators, because they're really the motivation for the workers," she said.
Help is also welcomed for the cleanup following next week's 106-hour, 4½-day building blitz. Messer said it's a chance for those under age 18 who are not allowed on the build site to finish the project.
Donations of materials, gift cards and cash are still being taken, she said. Design and construction needs are updated on the website, she said.
To donate, go to www.extrememakeoverfm.com and follow the links to a PayPal page, Messer said.
Music lovers can do their fundraising part by taking in the 32 Below concert tonight at The Venue at The Hub, 2525 9th Ave. S.
The all-ages show starts at 8 p.m. The doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10, with children under age 12 free. All proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales go to help the family for whom the home is being built, Messer said. Tickets are available at the door.
