Lois M. Sewell
Lois M. Sewell died at her home of recurrent breast cancer on Jan. 19, 2009. She was born in Morris on Sept. 12, 1941, the fifth of eight children born to John George Maughan and Eunice (Parsons) Maughan. Her great-grandfather, William Lee Colyer, was one of the early settlers of Stevens County. She graduated as co-valedictorian from Morris High School in 1959. Lois was awarded a Charles Kettering scholarship to Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio from which she graduated magna cum laude. In 1963 she married Jerry McCune. They moved to Bloomington, Ind. to attend graduate school. Lois received an MA degree in Library Science in 1964, and she then began to work as a cataloger in the Indiana University Libraries. She was divorced from Jerry McCune in 1995, and she later married Leigh R. Sewell.
From a very early age, Lois loved animals, especially horses, dogs, and cats. For nine years while married to Jerry McCune, she enjoyed owning and riding horses. She also enjoyed drawing, painting, classical music, reading, hiking, feeding the birds, and cooking. She loved making quilts and colorful camp shirts. She enjoyed being outdoors and knew the names of most of the trees in Indiana. She was especially fond of gardening, and she had many hybrid daylily and iris flowers which were enjoyed by many who walked or drove by her gardens.
Lois was a member of the American Library Association and was active in the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services Division. She was also a member of the Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians, Online Audiovisual Catalogers, Inc., and the Indiana University Librarians Association. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and over the years held many leadership positions in the Women's Relief Society, the Young Women's Organization, and the Primary Organization.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, John G. and Eunice Maughan, by two brothers, John W. Maughan and George E. Maughan, and by a sister, Doris Verdonselli. She is survived by her daughter, Darcie McCune, and son Kyle McCune, as well as grandchildren: Blaire, Cheyenne, Jesse, Mitchell, Jaden, and Chance. Also surviving are two brothers, William H. Maughan and his wife, Jenny of Australia, and Stanley R. Maughan and his wife, Tamra, of Edina; and two sisters, Ruth Foster and husband Kay of Lewisville, Idaho, and Martha Jeannette Flamming of Salt Lake City, 17 nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Also surviving are her dogs, Sophie, Dee, and Buddy, and her two cats, Rascal and Ella.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Bloomington, Ind. Memorial contributions may be made to the Monroe County Humane Association, the Community Kitchen, Hospice, and the Stevens County Historical Society.
