Items from the Tribune of March 25, 1949

The Morris High School Tigers, victors over Graceville and Starbuck in a doubleheader here Tuesday evening, will perform before home fans again on Saturday evening when they meet the Elbow Lake quint. The Tigers already have one triumph over the Lakers and will be favored to win here again tomorrow night.

Sports minded folk of the community, including farmers as well as business and professional men of Morris and others in the community whose interests fall along this line, are invited and urged to attend a meeting in the Eagles Hall Feb. 28.  The meeting has been called to discuss the proposed organization of Sports, Inc., which would have for its purpose the promulgation of a definite sports program for the community. One of the first objectives of the proposed new organization would be to obtain floodlights for the new baseball field which will be located in the new recreational area on the eastern edge of the city. Initial construction work on the new field was started last fall.

Because of the interest shown in the community toward the conservation of wild life and towards nature study the formation of a Stevens County Audubon Society will be undertaken in the near future.  Mrs. Floyd Strand, Morris, has been appealing to nature lovers through her Rural Homemaker Column and has learned that many people are requesting membership in such an organization and additional information is wanted.

Both the stock judging and the crops judging teams from the West Central School at Morris placed third in sub-collegiate judging contests at the Crookston Winter Shows.  The Morris crops team was coached by R. O. Bridgford while H. G. Croom coached the livestock team.

Items from the Tribune of March 13, 1969

 The Morris Eagles presented a check in the amount of $100 to the Stevens County Association for Retarded Children at the conclusion of a fund-raising project for that purpose at the Eagles Hall Friday evening. Present for the check presentation was Les Brown, president of the Morris Eagles; Mrs. R, A. Staebler, president of the Stevens County ARC; Mrs. Dorothy Zinda, Special Education instructor in the Morris Schools, and Ernest Stein, Eagles vice president.  

   Eagle Scout Brion Dalager and Life Scout Paul W. (Bill) Kopitzke Jr., were presented the Pro Deo of Patria Award–the highest award that the Lutheran Church can present to a Scout–at worship services at First Lutheran Church in Morris on Feb. 16.  Among the many requirements to qualify for this award are 150 hours of actual work at the church and a special project. Taking part in the presentation ceremony with Rev. C. M. Grindland were Scoutmaster Sandy Munson and Assistant Scoutmaster Walter L. Erickson of Troop 467, and the boys' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Dalager and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kopitzke.

William (Bill) Smith was named city manager of Morris at the regular monthly meeting of the city council Monday evening. Mr. Smith will also continue as executive director of the local Housing Authority and, in that capacity, will be in local charge of the housing-for-the-elderly project now under construction. Mr. Smith came to Morris from Huron, S.D. when he and his brother, Byron, opened a Firestone Store here in 1945.  The business is continuing under the management of Byron Smith.

Herbert G. Croom, member of the Morris Kiwanis Club for the past 26 years, has been nominated for the office of district governor of the Minnesota-Dakotas District of Kiwanis International, it was announced at the weekly meeting of the club Monday evening at the Del Monico Cafe.  

Mrs. Donald Chizek of Morris was one of nine lay persons elected to the St. Cloud Diocesan board of education last week.  Electors from the parishes in the diocese met at a regional center to elect nine members from the 22 candidates who had filed. The western region included Morris, Fergus Falls, Alexandria, Breckenridge, and surrounding areas.

Items from the Sun of March 7, 1989

Sno-week king candidates at Morris High School were assembled at the library last week.  They are Jerry Evenson, Matt Sibul, Todd Boettcher, Todd Oland and Brooks Hill. Crowns will be bestowed the evening of March 16.

The emotion on behalf of the Morris High School boys basketball team was expressed in a vocal way Saturday afternoon.  The Tigers were victorious in the District 21 championship game and are now readying for regions. The Hancock girls basketball team will be heading to state on Thursday when they plunge into action vs. Eden Valley-Watkins at the Met Center.

The Starbuck Times and editor Ron Lindquist were honored by the Minnesota Newspaper Association's Better Newspaper Contest during the annual convention held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Minneapolis last weekend. Linquist was singled out as the winner of the Herman Roe Editorial Writing Award.  A total of 73 entries were made for this award, which is given to only one newspaper, regardless of its size or being a daily or a weekly publication.

The Minnesota Viking Basketball Team, featuring stars from the NFL Team, will play the Morris Allstars on April 8 at the PE Center at the University of Minnesota, Morris.  Starring for the Allstars will be Player/Coach Perry Ford also Dale Henrich, Jerry Witt and others. All proceeds will go to the Post Prom Party Parents.  The Minnesota Vikings active roster while on the barnstorming tour includes Alfred Anderson, Joey Browner, Steve Jordan, Darrin Nelson, Ted Brown, Scott Studwell, Allen Rice, Rufus Bess, Mark MacDonald, Keith Millard, Leo Lewis and Walker Lee Ashley.  

The Morris Speech Team placed sixth overall out of 18 schools at the invitational meet in Willmar Thursday.  Individual winners were: Karen Chae, Michele Gibson, Nathan Evenson, Richard Chae, Nicole Wolff, Jenny Power-Ettesvold, Jeni Schmidgall and Heather VanSlooten.
