Items taken from the Sun of August 12, 1952

Earl Wilts, Eldorado Township farmer, was the winner of the new Chevrolet automobile given away at the Grant County Fair in Herman on Sunday, Aug. 3. Mr. Wilts received the keys for the car from Frank Kinsella, Grant County Fair president. Joyce Ann Wulgekuhle of Wendell drew the lucky number, and who, incidentally, got $10 from Mr. Wilts for her part in his good fortune.


Fr. Francis Hohn, pastor of St. Theresia Church, Donnelly, for three years, was recently transferred to St. Mary's Parish in Chokio and Fr. M. Billmayr, pastor at St. Mary's for more than eight years, has been transferred to the St. Theresia Parish. The priests conducted their first services in their new churches on Sunday, Aug. 3.

Mr. Guy C. Bugbee, proprietor of The Morris Drug since he established the business here in 1939, has announced his sale of the business to Carl Johnson of Sioux Falls, S.D. Mr. Johnson, who formerly resided in the Brookings, S.D. area, has been a pharmacist in Sioux Falls for a number of years. Mr. Bugbee has not decided on his future plans.

Another successful turnout downtown Morris for the annual Crazy Days. The streets were packed with early morning shoppers looking for crazy priced bargains.

The Morris New World Center, an outgrowth of the Walk for Development, is now in operation. Currently the Center is attempting to operate a Farmers' Aid Center. This consists of having a resource of people available to help farmers in the area when help is requested. So far, painting and baling have been done for area farmers, but other, different types of work can be done according to the skills, knowledge, and willingness of the workers.

Eugene Mechelke of Morris is one of 26 Midwest high school teachers slated to receive certificates of completion today from a summer institute at Mount Marty College, Yankton, S.D.

George Schwartz, associate extension agent in Sibley County, has accepted the position of Stevens County Extension agent, according to Warren Morton, chairman of the Stevens County Extension Committee. Schwartz will succeed Leif Lie, who resigned the position in May.

A total of 2.17 inches of rain was dumped on the Morris area during another severe electrical storm Tuesday night and early Wednesday. The storm covered a wide area through the state and downpours of up to three inches are reported from many localities.

Information about the proposed ice arena became clearer Monday, while the swimming pool waters were muddied. Jim Beauregard, president of the Morris Hockey Association, told the City Council at a work session that they were looking at a number of possible site locations for the proposed ice arena. Beauregard said of the two possible sites for the ice arena--the old MN/DOT property and the fairgrounds--the fairgrounds is becoming the primary site.

Stevens County fairgoers can enjoy many free shows throughout the Stevens County Fair, Aug. 12-16. All performances will take place on the second free stage located on the fairgrounds. On Thursday afternoon, "The Blenders" will entertain on the grounds as a warm up for an evening of musical entertainment. Returning for a second year is the "Wizard of Ahs" Bob Condon to perform magic on Friday and Saturday afternoons.

Gianna French, daughter of George and Arly French of Morris, attended a Future Leaders of America Camp at the College of Saint Benedict July 18-24.

Patricia J. Rieck, Donnelly, has been accepted at the University of Minnesota, Morris for fall quarter 1992. She resides in Donnelly with husband, Curtis.
