The Morris Area/Hancock Area/Chokio-Alberta Tiger Wrestling Team opened its 2013-2014 dual team season at home with a 45-25 win over the Sauk Centre/Melrose Mainstreeters Tuesday, Dec. 3.

In a time when some schools struggle to keep their wrestling teams viable, it appeared these two programs had no problems with numbers.

Over twenty preliminary bouts took place prior to a late start to the varsity competition. This was certainly appreciated by the large crowd that filled the Hancock High School gym to watch wrestling.

In the varsity competition, the Tigers used their experienced wrestlers to out muscle SC/M by a score of 45-25.

SC/M scored first with a fall at 106 pounds. Christian Athey, one of only two freshmen on the varsity squad, was pinned by Antonio Ortiz in a time of :27 seconds.

Junior Matt Munsterman got the Tigers on the board with an overtime win at 113 pounds. Munsterman took down Jordan Winter in the first overtime period for a 6-4 win.

Junior Mitchell Ascheman then followed up with a quick pin in :38 seconds over Nestor Vazquez at 120 pounds.

Jared Rohloff, the other freshman for the Tigers, was defeated 11-4 by Kolton Kuhlman at 126 pounds This tied the score at 9-9.

At 132 pounds, sophomore Phillip Messner lost by a major decision 11-1 to Will Funk to put the Mainstreeters up 13-9.

The strength of the Tigers is in the middle weights and they kicked in big time.

Sophomore Travis Ostby wasted no time, pinning Mitchell Wolbeck in :31 seconds at 138 pounds. This put the Tigers in the lead for good.

The seniors then took over. The Tigers number six ranked senior and returning state entrant Dillan Johnson followed suit with a pin in :46 seconds over Junior Perez at 145 pounds.

Senior Myles Smith then pinned Luke Glasener in :58 seconds at 152 pounds.

Finally, senior Jerid Berning won a 9-2 decision over Rodrigo Milla at 160 lbs. The score was now 30-13.

SC/M got one back at 170 pounds when sophomore Steven Koehl was defeated by a fall in 3:29 by Dalton Reinke.

The Tigers picked up two forfeits at 182 and 195 pounds. Senior Danny Tracy received the first one (182) and Senior Aaron Nelson received the second (195).

Junior Alec Guasman then won a hard fought match at 220 pounds. Guasman got a last second reversal over Jimmy Thomas to win the match 7-6.

The final match of the night saw junior Jacob Sperr pinned by Charlie Barhorst at 285 pounds. Sperr was at about a 50 pound disadvantage being a lighter competitor in the highest weight class.

The final score was 45-25 Tigers.

The next competition for the Tigers will be the Grant County Individual Tournament in Barrett on Saturday, December 14th. . The next team competition for the Tigers will be a home match against the Breckenridge Cowboys on Tuesday, December 17th.
