Feb. 9, 1922-Dec. 1, 2007
Former Detroit Lakes resident Mary R. Peterson, age 85, of Faribault, Minn., died of congestive heart failure on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at the St. Lucas Care Center in Faribault.
Mary Rebecca Cowles was born to Dr. Edgar and Anna Cowles on Feb. 9, 1922 in Detroit Lakes. She graduated from Holmes High School in Detroit Lakes in 1940. She married Lawrence "Pete" Peterson in 1941. They moved to the Minnetonka area, where her husband owned a construction company. Mary worked in Wayzata at Hillcrest Nursing Home in the physical therapy department.
Mary and Pete were charter members of the Minnetonka Lutheran Church and longtime members of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Audubon. They retired to the Detroit Lakes area, and lived on Cormorant Lake in the summer while enjoying the winters in Mission, Texas.
Mary was an amazingly warm and caring person; she freely shared her thoughts, wisdom, and material things with others, as well as her love of her pets. She was known for her quick wit and wild sense of humor. Mary, lovingly known as Mimi, will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her children, Donna (Brad) Dyar, John (Faith) Peterson, Kathy (Steve) Taylor and Laurie (Tom) Klemens; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Irene Oien; as well as other relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her husband, Lawrence Peterson; and parents, Dr. Edgar and Anna Cowles.
A gathering of family and friends was scheduled from 5:30-7:30 p.m. today (Wednes-day) at Parker-Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault.
A celebration of Mary's life and burial will take place in the spring at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Audubon. Notice of that date will follow.
