Mehr's 17 points helps Cougars defeat Saints
Emily Mehr returned to the lineup Friday night to help the University of Minnesota, Morris defeat St. Scholastica 64-51. Mehr had a game-high 17 points as the Cougars held the Saints to just 31.1 percent from the field.
The Saints hit their first four three pointers, including three in the opening 2:11 of the game, to jump out to an 11-0 lead.
Morris cut the lead to seven, but another three pointer and a layup made it 18-6 Saints with less than 13 minutes left in the half.
Trailing 20-8 with 12:30 left in the half, the Cougars went on a 15-3 run over the next seven plus minutes to take a 23-22 lead on a Kendra Wycoff free throw. Four players had at least three points during the run, including four from Cori Becker.
St. Scholastica took the lead back at 24-23, but UMM scored four of the next five points in the half to take a 27-25 lead into the locker room.
St. Scholastica tied the game out of the halftime break, but Morris got the next six to take a 33-27 lead. After the Saints had drawn within two at 35-33, the Cougars hit a pair of jumpers and a pair of layups to go up 43-33.
Mehr scored four straight points to increase the UMM lead to 50-35 with just under 8:30 left in the game.
The lead would get as large as 17 on three separate occasions before the Saints cut it to 13 with just over two minutes left.
Morris shot 63.6 percent in the second half as they pulled away from the Saints.
Despite the Saints hitting nine three pointers on 19 attempts, they were just 3-of-13 from behind the arc other than in the first three minutes of the game and the last four minutes of the game. The Cougars outscored the Saints 30-12 in the paint.
Abby Fragodt ended the game with 14 rebounds for her sixth time this season with double digit rebounds.
Mehr finished with 10 rebounds earning her a double double. Kayla Kramer ended with 12 points and Wycoff finished with 10.
