The University of Minnesota, Morris men's soccer team scored a dramatic late-match goal Monday for a 1-0 win over the University of Wisconsin, Superior.
It was better late than never for Cory Schmeling who took a pass from Matt Vik and beat Yellow Jacket goalkeeper Tom Fitzer for the victory at the 87:39 mark.
Already with one shutout on the young season, the Cougar defense was up to the task again, limiting UW-Superior to just six second-half shots, with just three landing on goal. The Yellow Jackets were also held to just one corner in the match, including none in the second half, while the Cougars took four on the day.
Pitching the shutout and collecting seven saves along the way was goalkeeper Tyler Simpson who got the win in his first start of the season.
With an even record of 1-1-1 the Cougars will return home this weekend for a pair of matches with St. Thomas and Macalester. It will be the final non-conference tune-up for UMM, as the Cougars begin UMAC play the following weekend when they host Crown on Sept. 17.
