"The End of the World as we knew it."
This was the title I saw recently on the cover of a new NIV study Bible for youth. Perhaps you have seen it. It seems as though so many people are talking about the Lord's returning. Different people call it different things, but basically it is the Biblical reference where Christ returns to earth for His faithful. Is that actually going to happen? Many people today seem to be pondering that very question. I have heard many different ministers of several faiths make the claim that they are again sensing that the time is near. Larry Norman wrote a song about it in the 70's and it had lines in it like, "two men walking up a hill, one disappears and one left standing still." His main line was, "I wish we'd all been ready." Are you?
The other fascinating aspect of this is that certain people, albeit to one side, are wondering if President Obama is somehow linked to end time events. Is he the one? Or one of the people who will help usher in the end? Certain people seem to think so. America now has bumper stickers claiming that the terrorists won't ruin America; Obama will beat them to it! This is a dim view, and scripture calls us to pray for our elected leaders.
Whatever you believe, the question from Larry Norman's song still comes back to me. "Man and wife asleep in bed, she hears a noise and turns her head, he's gone..." Are you ready, or do you know for certain that if Christ should return you are ready? Do you have a close personal relationship with Him? If you died today, and you stood before God and He asked you, "Why should I let you into heaven?" What would you say?
Some of my favorite verses come from Romans 10:8-11 "But what does it say?"
The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." It makes it so simple. It does not matter what gender or age you are, what nationality or denomination you are, but simply that each individual comes to Christ for themselves.
Along with new trends or beliefs in the spiritual and political realm in America one of the most exciting things I have seen in the last six months is the promise from Joel 2, that God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh. I have seen this promise fulfilled at a greater rate than at any time in my years here. What time is it in our nation's or world's history? I don't know, but I do know that it is time for us as a people to draw close to Christ and be a part of any outpouring that He may be causing. It has been refreshing. I invite you to turn to Him. He has promised to be there waiting for you!
Blessings, Pastor Tom
