Missed free throws costly in Tiger loss

The Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta Tigers lost two non-conference games on the road in girls basketball action this week. On Friday, Jan. 3, the Tigers traveled to Milbank, South Dakota where they took a close loss 51-49. Then on Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Tigers were in Pelican Rapids and fell to the Vikings 71-57.

The girls are now 4-5 and play in Yellow Medicine East tonight, Thursday, Jan. 9 for a conference game.

Milbank 51, Morris/C-A 49

The Tigers fell to Milbank last Friday, Jan. 3 for their fourth loss of the season, putting their record at 4-4.

The Tigers shot 42 percent in two point range, but the free throw line may have cost them the game, making only six of 13 attempts from the stripe.

The Holland sisters led the team in double digit scoring. Sophomore guard Becca Holland had 15 points on 7-12 shooting, including a three point shot. Senior guard Beth Holland finished with 11 points on 50 percent shooting.

Becca Holland also picked up six steals defensively for the Tigers.

The Tiger B-squad improves to 8-0 as they came away with the win over Milbank 42-37. The game was tied 30-all going into the final eight minutes of play, but the B-squad Tigers went on a 12-7 run to take their eighth win in a row against Milbank.

Correy Hickman and Piper Gibson were the score leaders in the win with 15 and 12, respectively. Hickman also had four steals on defense, and Nicole Solvie grabbed four rebounds for the Tigers.

Pelican Rapids 71, Morris/C-A 59

Fouls, turnovers, and missed free throws hindered the Tigers in their 71-59 loss to Pelican Rapids on Tuesday, Jan. 7. The Tigers had 24 fouls and 14 turnovers in two halves of play against the Vikings. Offensively, the Tigers shot 42 percent from two point range, but just 3-10 from the free throw line–easy missed points for the Tigers.

The Holland sisters led the team in scoring, again, with 17 points for Beth Holland and 12 points for Becca. Liz Tiernan ended the game with six points and a perfect 100 percent field goal percentage.

Lacee Maanum and Abbie Olson both grabbed seven rebounds each, and Kaitlin Vogel had six. Lauren Reimers had four offensive rebounds and four assists for the Tigers.

The Tiger B-squad knocked off Pelican Rapids 56-28, improving their undefeated record to 9-0. Courtney Storck led the B-squad with 12 points, while six other players had four plus points in the victory. The Tigers’ ability to adapt to their opponent as the game progresses aided the Tigers in limiting Pelican Rapids to just four baskets in the second half.

The Tigers host Lac Qui Parle Valley and BOLD on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 13-14, respectively. The Tigers finish up next week with a trip to the rivalry school of Benson to battle the Braves in a conference matchup on Friday, Jan. 17.
