Webster submitted his letter of resignation to Mayor Sheldon Giese on May 21, and the council accepted his resignation at their meeting Tuesday night.

In his letter, Webster said he and his wife, Shaune, are planning to move to Florida in August.

"A move and change had long been planned for when I reached age 62, and my term would have concluded, but circumstances quite remarkably fell into place, and we feel we must ride the wave into the next phase of our lives," Webster wrote.

The Morris City Council will need to appoint a new city council member with 30 days of Webster's retirement date to fill the seat until the end of 2012, City Manager Blaine Hill said.

Webster's seat will then be open in this November's general election.

Applicants filing for city council will need to specify whether they are running to fill the rest of Webster's two-year term, or for the two four-year terms that will be opening up when council members Bill Storck and Matt Carrington's terms are up.
