Because their Jan. 9 meeting was the first of the year, the Morris City Council addressed some procedural issues and gave the oath of office for council members Bill Storck and Kevin Wohlers, who were elected in November.
The council elected Jeff Miller as Mayor Pro Tem, to serve as chair of council meetings when Mayor Sheldon Giese cannot attend. The council also elected Miller president of the Morris Economic Development Authority, with Bill Storck serving as vice president.
The council also approved the following list of committee assignments for 2013:
Jeff Miller: Park Board, Planning Commission, West Central Initiative Economic Development District
Brian Solvie: Regional Fitness Center, Community Education
Kevin Wohlers: Morris Area Human Rights Commission, Morris Area Chamber of Commerce
Sheldon Giese: Stevens County Economic Improvement Commission, Tourism Board
Bill Storck: Airport Committee, Morris Rental Housing Commission
The council also approved the list of citizen members who serve on its committees. There are currently vacancies on the Morris Area Human Rights Commission, HRA Board, Rental Housing Commission, Tourism Board.
The council approved a new engineering services agreement with Widseth, Smith, Nolting and Associates for Jeff Kuhn to continue as the City Engineer. WSN works primarily on the city's road projects.
The council approved a master partnership agreement with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. While there are no projects currently in place, having this agreement in place allows MN DOT to work with the City of Morris in the future if a project arises.
The council approved a $2,000 donation to West Central Initiative.
City Manager Blaine Hill told the council that the paperwork is moving forward to certify the Tax Increment Financing districts that will be used to help develop the old elementary school property. Hill said that plans and specifications for the demolition are nearly finished, and that he anticipates being ready to solicit bids in the next few months.
