Morris falls to Madison in first round, plays Granite Falls Thursday in Montevideo
Madison scored three runs in the top of the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh to defeat Morris Legion Post 29 4-1 in District 7 first round action Tuesday in Montevideo.
With the win Madison will now face Eden Valley in the winner's bracket and Morris will take on Granite Falls in an elimination game at 5:15 on Thursday, again in Montevideo.
Alex Erickson pitched a complete game for Morris, giving up two earned runs on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Erickson hit the first pitch that he saw leading off the bottom of the first for a home run to give Morris an early 1-0 lead. The game stayed that way until the sixth as Erickson and Madison's pitcher, Joey Schreck, dominated the game.
In the sixth, Madison strung together three straight one-out hits and Morris committed two costly errors as they scored three times.
Madison added the insurance run in the seventh and it looked like they might need it as Mitch Kill and Brody Bahr led off the bottom of the seventh with singles for Post 29. Schreck steadied himself however, retiring the next three Morris hitters to preserve the win.
Erickson was 2-for-3, the only Post 29 hitter with more than one hit.
Morris committed five costly errors in the contest while Madison played errorless ball.
