Morris Haz Mat team called to Dilworth RR spill

A rail car leaked gasoline Monday afternoon east of Dilworth, Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist said.

A Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway worker spotted the leak, which was reported to dispatchers at 2:31 p.m. about a half-mile east of Dilworth, Bergquist said.

The gas was coming out the top of the car and "pouring right down the side," he said.

The spill was likely caused by expansion of the gasoline when the car warmed up in the sunlight, he said.

Bergquist said BNSF dispatched its own hazardous materials team from Morris, Minn., to handle the spill.

Dilworth and Moorhead firefighters monitored the situation to make sure nothing sparked the flammable liquid, Bergquist said.

The railroad tracks acted as a natural dike to keep the gas from running into a nearby drainage ditch, he said.

Gas was still leaking from the car at 4 p.m., Bergquist said.
