The Morris VFW baseball team improved its District 5 record to a league leading 4-0 with a 6-5 win over Alexandria I Tuesday, June 17 at Chizek Field in Morris. Post 5039 trailed by a score of 5-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but scored two runs to pull out the victory.

Alex I took a 4-0 lead by scoring single runs in each of the first four innings off of Morris starting pitcher Eric Riley. Only two of the runs were earned, as Morris made a pair of costly errors in the field. Control issues would also plague the Morris team as Alex I was given 10 extra base runners in the game by either walks or hit batters.

A four-run fourth inning tied the game for Post 5039. Alex Erickson led off the inning by reaching on an error. Ryan Beyer then beat out an infield single.

After a fly ball advanced Erickson to third, Brady Valnes and Jon Jallo came through with consecutive RBI singles to make the score 4-2. Then with runners on second and third, Nate Gibson lined a single to left field to score both runners and tie the game.

Travis Rinkenberger came on to pitch for Morris in the fifth inning and Alex I was able to scratch out a run in the top of the sixth inning. After Alex Erickson came in relief and pitched a scoreless seventh, Morris mounted a comeback in the bottom of the inning.

Erickson reached on a one-out single and then Beyer lined the next pitch into the left field gap for a double to score Erickson with the tying run. Riley then hit a sharp grounder that the second baseman could not handle to allow Beyer to score the winning run.

Erickson was the winning pitcher and Beyer had three of the team's seven hits on the night.

In the second five-inning game Alex I won by a score of 12-1.

Ethan Bruer and Gibson handled the pitching for Morris. Bruer, Beyer, and Tanner Berning had hits for Morris with Berning driving in the only run for Post 5039. The second game of the night does not count in the league standings.
